Spot Description:
Lake Ontario is known for being one of the top fishing waters in North America. Made famous by its unbelievable Salmon fishery, it also has its fair share of trophy Walleye waters. Henderson Harbor port is one of the best tourist spots on the lake offering numerous hotels, cozy bed and breakfasts, as well as many great dining spots. Beaches, as well as campgrounds are only minutes from port. The Trout and Salmon fishing here is consistent from ice out (early to mid April) to the first part of October. Early in the season, the Excusion 3 can be found along the many sandy shorelines of the eastern basin plying the water for Brown Trout. The Brown Trout fishing stays good right through June. Starting in June when the offshore thermo cline gears up, Lake Ontario’s most famous sports fish – the King or Chinook Salmon – make their presence known! The offshore summer Salmon fishing in Henderson Harbor is second to none. Every year, we see more and more charter boats from other ports making the long ride in to fill their boxes with dime-bright Kings! The combination of offshore structure, bait, current, and temperature create ideal conditions for Silver Salmon to put their feed bags on! Salmon fishing remains consistent right up through September (just before they go up the rivers to spawn). Average size fish range between 15-25 pounds, with fish over 30 pounds, not uncommon. The fish that made Henderson Harbor famous! Smallmouth Bass fishing in Henderson Harbor is what Hershey, Pennsylvania is to chocolate!

Fishing tips for the Golden Crescent Area
Overall fishing has been excellent. Most can catch fish as long as the wind is not to heavy being able to get to where you want to fish. Many nice lake trout and salmon were entered in the derby over the weekend in Henderson Harbor. What a great fishery! Friday was one gnarly, wild and wet day for those of us that fished. Brown trout fishing has been very productive all week. Many are caught while targeting salmon while others just target browns. Northern kings and Michigan Stingers have been best baits. Many colors have worked as it’s been a mixture depending on the fisherman. Combinations in black, purple, green, chartreuse and orange with silver backs all have worked well. Best places have been Stony Point wall, the “finger”, between the “slab”-Salmon River and in front of Sandy Pond. Best depths have been 90-140 feet down in 100-150 feet of water. Many small salmon are being caught. Occasionally a few adults are taken. Adults should be showing up soon. You can use same program as browns except the shipping lanes “when on” can be hot. Lake trout fishing has been excellent again this past week. This fishery on normal days can supply some exciting action with quality fish. For many these are the biggest fish they have ever caught. Almost any glo-colored spin & glo’s, peanuts, Flat Fish and fireplugs behind silver-chartreuse, silver-green, Fire Tiger, monkey puke bells produced in 110-145 feet of water off the “finger”. Bass fishing with live bait has been good in some spots and slow in other traditional spots. Most feel it’s just plain being in the right spot at the right time. If you hit the wrong spots that day you could be in for a long day. Trolling has still been productive. Some very nice catches have been made. Rapalas have been hot in chartreuse-white, black-silver, Fire Tiger and orange-white. It is hard to get away from that live bait or casting with fishing rod in hand though and some excellent catches have been made off Stony, Calf and the Galloo Islands. Crabs, minnows and worms have worked well. Best depths have been 20-40 feet of water. Perch fishing has been good with some exceptionally large ones taken off Bass and Gull Islands, Campbell’s Shoal, ½-1 mile along the east shore above Gill House in Henderson Harbor, Black River Bay, Cherry Island and Sherwin’s Bay. Most days you have to hunt to find them. Worms, perch and bass minnows are best baits. Walleye are in transition and hard to find. Hopefully water temps and bait gets organized on the lake to make for a good August-September fishery. This week’s safety tip from Office in Charge, Chief Boatswains Mate Philip Robinson at the Sackets Harbor Coast Guard Station is – Marine Radios: A cheap and reliable tool for getting help on the water is a marine radio. Permanent or hand held, they should be considered the next item to buy after you have all the mandatory equipment. Another good idea is to have your cell phone handy in case you are in a situation where you don’t have access to a marine radio. Again, these are basic weekly tips that can change daily but if the fish aren’t biting “still have fun”! Have a great summer. Good Fishing Capt. Bob Dick of Moby Dick Charters
