Mayport FL Fishing Report 08.13.12

AUGUST, 2012 August potentially has the warmest water and provides the best chance to catch a leaping hundred pound class tarpon. These fish migrate north along our coast each summer following the bait pods. Sometimes they can be seen behind the surf crashing into mullet or pogie schools. Other times they will be rolling in the channel edges at the jetties. King mackerel and bonito have now arrived in our coastal waters and will test your tackle with blistering runs in e...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 07.10.12

Summer is in full swing now that July has arrived. The kingfish tournaments are cranking up starting with the Kingbuster. Later in the month the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament will take place with hundreds of boats vying for the many prizes. It's the largest kingfish tournament in the world! The problem is the kings haven't arrived in any numbers yet! This could change overnight, and it's worth trolling a pogie spread every couple of days to keep track of their migrati...

Mayport Basin Fishing Report 02.19.12

This is usually the month of our coldest water temperatures; however, the weather was almost Spring-like for the first part of the month with the water in the mid to low 60's. We had a hard freeze last week, which took the temps down into the 50's, so remember to slow your retrieves of both artificial and live baits down when fishing during a cold snap. Also, take full advantage of the sun's thermal heating of our shallow backwaters. On cold days, some of the best fishing ma...

This is usually the month of our coldest water temperatures; however, recently the weather has been almost Spring-like with the water in the mid to low 60's. Thereis a hard freeze predicted for next week, so remember to slow your retrieves of both artificial and live baits down when fishing during a cold snap. Also, take full advantage of the sun’s thermal heating of our shallow backwaters. On cold days, some of the best fishing may be from midday on. That being said, fish frequen...

Saint Johns River Inlet Fishing Report 08.26.11

Capt. Bob Cosby   August 10, 2011 Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report   People on shore are sweltering in 95-100 degree heat, while we fishermen ply our trade atop 76 degree water. That's as close as you can get to outdoor air conditioning in Florida.   The king mackerel have been biting better recently, which is good news for the many local fishermen who love to fish for them. Spanish mackerel are hit and miss at the inlet mouth, but are larger now than earlie...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 07.06.11

Capt. Bob Cosby   July 2, 2011 Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report   The spanish mackerel are here and are ready willing and able to strike your glass minnow size spoon, jig, or fly. You can find them at the north jetty tip on the incoming tide. Sometimes they move up into the river and congregate at the little jetties.   Black tip and spinner sharks are following the shrimp boats. These are very strong and fast fish and will test your tackle and fitness level!...

St. Augustine Inlet Fishing Report 02.03.11

As blizzard after blizzard sweep across the country, we here in northeast Florida remain relatively untouched. We live in a unique place. The hurricanes seem to miss us (knock on wood) during the summer months, and the winters aren't all that bad.     The inshore fishing is still productive, particularly during a warming trend between fronts. Speckled trout are closed during the month of February. This month we have a big sheepshead tournament which is always fun. My charters h...

Mayport Basin Fishing Report 01.24.11

When the weather cooperates, the fishing has been fantastic at times.. There has been a great black drum bite going on at the Mayport jetties. The fish have been averaging 8-10 lbs. Remember, you can keep only one per person over 24 inches. I've had the best luck using 1/4 blue crab for bait. Redfish are mixed in with the drum and are also feeding up and down the length of the jetties. Reds can also be found in the creeks and along the ICW. They school up in large numbers in the winter. The tr...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 11.05.10

This is a very productive time of year for fishing in our part of the country. The water is cooling, which seems to stimulate feeding activity. Be ready to fish when the weather allows. Good catches of sheepshead are being reported by some of my friends. Fiddlers or crab knuckles are the best bait. The speckled trout bite is improving with keeper fish becoming more common. The tried and true sliding cork rig is most effective for these fish. Look for clear moving water.     The...

Inshore/nearshore report Jacksonville area waters Capt. Bob Cosby January 9, 2010 Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report   Despite winter conditions, there are still good fish to be caught if you were willing to brave the elements. Hopefully, the recent freezes won't kill off our improving snook fishery. An ideal situation for creek fishing is a low incoming tide in the early afternoon which will create relatively warm water over the dark mud flats. The reds will often cruise...

Inshore/nearshore report Jacksonville area waters Dropping water temperatures have fired up the fish in our local waters. Speckled trout are plentiful and cooperative both in the river and the ICW, especially north. They will hit live bait or artificials. Plastics worked slowly and deep should produce. Trout like for their quarry to try and escape, ie., when using live bait make sure it's fresh and flipping. Sheephead have moved in and are providing lots of action at area jetties. Fiddler...
