Dec 20 Fort Lauderdale Fishing Charters / Sailfish

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Charters aboard the Marlin My Darlin. Today we fished with Tray out of Michigan and a couple of his friends down for some sun and hopefully a good sized fish or two here on an offshore fishing trip. We actually fished Tray about two years ago and had a good charter, and he was back for more, but bigger and better this time. Good action before, but the request was for a big fish this time. We went “ right to it” as we say. Two kites and live Goggle-Eyes for bait. No trolling.This is very often the best was to attract a larger fish, whether it be a “Smoker” Kingfish, Wahoo, Sailfish or any bigger fish in the area. We catch a lot of big fish by trolling, but a set of  live Goggle Eyes fished below a couple of kites is a proven winner. We also set a four pound Kingfish down on the bottom in hopes of a good Shark. It is not high Shark season, but there are typically a few around. Typically.  We began in 180 feet and slowly worked out to 275 feet. One unidentified bite was all we got and no hookups. We put the boat into a controlled drift and slid back into 90 feet. Still no action. A few small Dorado and Bonito by the boys trolling. We weren’t missing anything exciting and chose to tough it out. About three hours into the trip we moved to an offshore wreck and sent a one pound live Blue Runner to the bottom on the braided (no stretch) line. Sailfish will at times hang around a wreck due to baitfish holding above the structure so we again set a kite (only one this time) and hoped for a chance. The first chance came on the Blue Runner on the bottom rod and was a good fish, but he got the best of us after a minute of heavy pulling on his end. Not good / still hoping for the right fish to bite and stay attached. Ten minutes later, long kite bait, live Goggle Eye, and a 90 inch  (7 and one/ half foot) Sailfish for Tray, and the trip was over. We got the Horseshoe today.
