We had an awesome day today on our Fort Lauderdale Fishing Charter. We went deep dropping on the bottom around a shipwreck fishing spot that we know in 250ft of water. There have been some big amberjacks around lately, so I wanted to try some wreck fishing. We pulled up on the spot, dropped our first live bait down and we were hooked up within the first minute of having the bait down. The first fish was a nice almaco jack, estimated at 25 pounds. With a bite that quick, it would be foolish not to try another drop. We dropped another live blue runner to the bottom and instantly we were hooked up again. This was a much bigger fish. We had the drag locked down into full as we were pulling ahead with the boat, trying to pull the fish away from the wreck far enough so that he couldn't take us back down into his hole. Despite the drag being almost on lockdown, the fish still took a lot of line. He probably almost made it back to the wreck when we managed to turn his head and get him coming up. He fought the majority of the way up really hard and then started getting easier- that means GROUPER!! When the snap swivel touched the rod tip, the big grouper surfaced with a belly full of air. It was a huge warsaw. We boated the fish and it weighed over 80 pounds. What a monster. Of course we made another drop right away. We hooked into another big almaco, again almost immediately. But when we were winding it up to the top, the rod suddenly yanked down hard and pulled a bunch of drag and then within seconds, slack. We though we lost the fish. When we wound it to the top, it was another almaco jack, but this one was only a head, it was missing the body. A big bull shark came up and ate the back half of the 20 pound almaco jack in a single bite. There are some big fish around the wrecks. We tried a few more drops, but no more bites. The wreck fish didn't like feeding with that big shark lurking the spot. Trolling home, we caught a few throw back kingfish and some small football sized blackfin tunas that we let go also. We had the 80 pound grouper in the box so we had plenty of meat. It was a great Fort Lauderdale fishing charter for us. Fishing is getting awesome this month and we're getting into the all-around best season for fishing in Fort Lauderdale! Good luck fishing everyone, catch 'em up!
