The Lower Shoshone. The river has about 12" of visibility. Still waiting on the lake to clear but it is getting better. We fished a little up on the stock trail on the 6th. We caught fish. Most of the fish were smaller cuttbows and cutts, some a little thin but most looked to be in pretty good shape. Water is still high but if you find the foam you can find rising fish. GAF has restocked it again with a ton of little cutts. Sow bugs on the swing and prince nymphs under a big dry. We saw BWO's, Caddis (black and tan), Yellow Sallies, and a bunch of midges. We'll keep trying it but it may be just fine this fall when it finally comes down and clears. Hurray!
The Shoshone Canyon Still high and off color but fishing is possible..
The Corbett section Still high and off color but fishing is possible.
Willwood Still high and off color but fishing is possible.
North Fork . The run of fish is slowing but a few fish are still being caught. Fish are heading back to the reservoir quickly. Still plenty of water in the river.
Clarks Fork Perfect conditions. Fishing is good with mostly smaller fish. A big fish is 13" to 16". Cooler weather will keep the fish down in the mornings until the waters warm a bit. Bright sunny days can be tough. Canyon is low and clear. Days are getting shorter so fish are on the feed.
Greybull Perfect conditions. Fish are wary on bright sunny days. Stay back and make your first cast count.
North Tongue. Midges are hatching all day. PMD's in the afternoon and caddis in the evening. Hoppers beetles and ants. We fished it on the 11th and it was fair at best. The fish just never really got going for us all day. We caught fish but had to work hard to get them. A accurate first cast was the best solution and then just persistence.
Newton East The lake is fishing good and fish are cruising the edges taking midges and scuds in the morning. There is a small callibaetis spinner fall before lunch and when it warms the fish are eating beetles ants, and hoppers at the edge of the reeds. Look for the browns, splake, and brookies to get going in the next couple weeks. Fished it on the 20th and the catching was good but the fish are looking abused. Lots of skinny fish. Browns and splake are showing signs of moving in.
Luce and Hogan Fishing is good. There are a bunch of fish in the lake now. It is a transition year. Not that many whoppers but plenty of 16" to 17" with a few 20's and a bunch of little guys. Hogan is excellent. There are cutts in there over the 20" mark. Fun fishing!
Sunshine Reservoir Fishing is very good. Strip nymphs along the bottom. Streamers with a big pull with a pause are also working well when it is windy. Fish look very good.
Wind River, Bighorn River, and Canyon Flows are down to 950cfs. Tossing streamers and nymphing is good. Tricos in the early A.M. Hoppers getting some fish on the edges. Faster deeper water in the canyon is starting to produce early and late. It will steadily get better as the weather cools. Tons of boats and some salad down low. I fished in the canyon on the 16th and it was as stated above. We got fish but had to work for them.
Yellowstone Park The west side is starting to fish real well now. Firehole is good! Bigger fish have moved back into the river from the tribs now that it has cooled off. BWO's on the cloudy days now. The Madison is starting to see some good #'s of run up browns and rainbows. Streamers and soft hackles swung through the deeper holes. Nymphing smaller baetis patterns will take finicky fish when nothing else works. It's really pretty out there now. Black canyon section is good. Streamers. The Lamar and Soda Butte are both fishing good. Water is low and clear and fish are concentrated and wary. Slough creek is fishing tough. Use stealth on the low clear water. Be patient. Takes can be excruciatingly slow this time of year. Lewis lake is starting to produce some nice browns in the 20" range on the southwest shore. We fished the Lamar on the 28th and it was good. Lots of cuttbows below Slough on big dries. Caught a great evening BWO hatch on Soda Butte on the way out. Great hatch right before sundown but the fish were very selective. Fun!
Bighorn River Fort Smith. Flows are way down . Early morning trico fishing is killer. Algae is clearing up. Streamers are catching a lot of nicer fish.
