Justin Milliken, driver of the 02 Jolly Mon Racing car drove like a mad man on Saturday night to put the Jolly Mon Racing team into victory lane. The weather threatened to delay the night's racing, but it held off long enough for Justin and crew to get the job done. The night consisted of 2, 50 lap races in the Late Model class. The first race Justin had qualified in 6th place; his work was cut out to get to the front, but that is where the car was going. After "laying back" for the first 10 laps or so, Justin struck out and picked off the 5th and 4th place cars. Shortly after passing the half way mark, Justin caught up to the 2nd and 3rd place cars which were battling for position. Justin came off turn 4 and got a run low on the straighaway, going 3 wide. The Jolly Mon car was on rails as Justin took turn 1 and ducked under both cars, sliding ahead and clear coming out of turn 2. The first place car had created a large lead, but as luck would have it, a caution brought the field back together at lap 40. The restart made for tight racing as Justin ran bumper to bumper with the leader, past track Champion, Rick Smith in the #28. However, Rick and the #28 were too strong and were able to hold the lead to take the victory, making Justin and the Jolly Mon Racing team a close 2nd finish. Very strong considering the 6th place start, but still the win stays elusive for the team.
The second race had Justin starting in 4th place. The green flag dropped and the Jolly Mon car picked up where it left off; on the move. Justin moved to 2nd in a hurry and found himself nose to tail with last year's track champion, Brent Brinson in the Western Auto #1. The two are no strangers, and this time they had 40 laps to work out their differences. The Jolly Mon car ran the low line while the Western Auto car ran one groove higher on the track. Justin got his nose under the #1 car and found himself in the lead by lap 15. Brent took the high line back to the lead as the two continued to swap the lead for the next 30 laps. At lap 45 the #1 car slipped a bit coming out of turn 4 and Justin got his nose under him to take the lead coming out of turn 2. The two raced door to door for the final laps, but it was Justin in the 02 Jolly Mon Racing car that made the final move and took the checkered flag and headed to victory lane. Not only was it a win, it was an incredible race. As a spectator, it kept me on the edge of my seat. Congratulations to driver, Justin Milliken, crew chief, Tiny Guyton, lead mechanic, Willie Grainger and owner, Jamie Milliken.
If you missed this weekends race, do not fret as there are many more to come this season. The Late Models will not race for the next few weekends, but will be back in action Saturday, May 22nd. Come join the fun and root on the Jolly Mon Racing team as they will again seek victory lane. FISHING REPORT
The Gulf Stream fishing made the biggest advance this week. Finally, warm water pushed inshore from the Gulf Stream and provided favorable water conditions, and like clockwork, the fish showed as well. In particular, the Wahoo action was strong. Also, the Blackfin Tuna showed up in good numbers as they pushed schools of Flying Fish to the surface. They were quick to bite small trolled feathers, and some fishermen even targeted them by sight casting surface plugs. A few Mahi began to show as well, but it is early yet for them. Look for the next week or two to provide mixed action from Wahoo, Tuna and Mahi before the big push of Mahi shows up in mid May. Great fishing lay in wait in the Stream.
That's the report. Stay tuned to
www.OIFC.com for daily reports on fishing action. The OIFC fishing team is packing up and heading to Jensen Beach, FL to compete in the first leg of the SKA Pro Tour. Last year the team finished 4th in the event; maybe this year's event will be as successful.
