Description:

Lots of people travel to Cape Hatteras to fish the Gulf Stream waters that lie just a short distance from the coast. Many plan a day or two offshore for an exciting activity during their week long stay on the Outer Banks, while others make the drive just for a day's fishing.

Hatteras is known for its great marlin fishing too. May through September holds pretty good promise of a billfish bite. I tend to think that our better blue marlin fishing is earlier, May to June, while our white marlin and sailfish bites seem to pick up in July. It is not out of the question to catch any and all of our billfish species through the summer months, and there is always that possibility of a "grand slam," especially in July and August.

This is just a brief overview of what you can expect offshore of Hatteras, throughout the year.

May 16 Double Team

Ken and Todd tag-teamed the gaffers today while Vickie took pictures! The dolphin action was very steady today, and these two got all the action they could stand. We caught gaffers all day, quite a few in the mid to upper 20 pound range, but none that broke 30 pounds I don't think. The weather was very cooperative too, and even though thunderstorms are building across the sound this afternoon, we were pretty much in the clear all day. Thanks Ken, and I look forward to working on th...

5/17 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

We always have good luck when my friend Bobby comes along. Today was no exception. For starters, the ocean was nice and calm. We watched as a huge thunderstorm tracked toward us, but fortunately, as we began to enter the leading edge, the storm began to dissipate, and the lightning subsided. Fishing was pretty steady. We scrapped along at the gaffers and wound up with a nice catch, plus a few blackfins. Congratulations Don, on a 37 pound citation dolphin! Thanks again Bobby!...

Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

May 14 5/14 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report   We ventured offshore slowly this morning due to a steep southeast sea. The ride offshore took longer than usual, but when we got there, the fishing was as good as it gets. We caught gaffer dolphin until 11:00, and left hem biting. My guys felt compassion on the one "green" member of the group, and decided to take him home. Still, they had all the fish they needed and were thrilled with their great luck...

May 5 Another Day In The Deep

The weather was perfect again today, and the dolphin fishing was great! We caught the majority of our catch pretty early, gaffers and big bailers. I jogged offshore to skip some bigger baits, but never raised a marlin today. We did have a moment of excitement when we saw a big blue marlin slashing around after some dolphin, but we were never able to raise him into our baits. Thanks for another great trip Steve!...

May 4 Worth The Wait

My group for today has been plagued with bad weather, and blown out on their last three charter dates. Today made it all worth the wait! I didn't have a trip yesterday, but I heard that the dolphin fishing was good and that there had been some blue marlin action as well. We set our lines out close to 100 fathoms and started our search. There was plenty of grass, but it was a scattered mess and really hard to fish. We spent a lot of time cleaning off our baits, but did wind up with...

Apr 13 Fishin' Kids

Today I had the pleasure of fishing with my old friend Mark, who brought his sons Blake and Cole for a beautiful day offshore. I headed to where I thought we may find some blackfins for the boys to catch, but fishing was pretty slow for us. Both of the boys did catch a dolphin, and Blake broke the ice with his first tuna! Frank caught a 23 pound citation blackfin and a dolphin too! Thanks again Mark. It was great fishing with you and I look forward to some bailers this summer with the...

4/14 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

You simply can't beat great weather AND fishing! Things were a little crowded offshore today, so I picked a spot that wasn't jammed up with boats and started. There was a scattered wahoo bite around the fleet, and within an hour or two, we had caught two out of four bites. After a pretty good spell without a bite, I decided to take my chances in the deep. There had been a few dolphin reported in some scattered grass, so I was hoping to get lucky. We caught one or two a couple d...

The wahoo fishing continued to be great today! We had some pretty great wahoo fishing today, mostly this morning. We wound up landing nine out of fourteen bites! Apr 4 Cowboy's Birthday

Today fishing was GREAT! I'm not sure how many wahoo bites we had, but our batting average was well below 50%, and we still managed to catch six, including two citations, a 40 and a 42 pounder. We also had a lot of blackfin action, landing ten or so. Right at the end of the day we caught a lone gaffer dolphin, which was the only dolphin we saw today. Apr 3 Big Wahoos!

We set our hopes on tuna action today, but the wahoos quickly took center stage! We did catch four decent size blackfins this morning, but the area that we were fishing was quickly getting overtaken by cold green water. It was looking like the chances of catching more tuna were gonna be slim, and they were, but the wahoo action took it's place. We wound up catching six out of ten or twelve bites, including two citations. Mike caught a 59 pounder, which was just shy of the 61 pounde...

There were only two of us out today, but it turned out to be really nice weather and great fishing! The winds were forecasted to increase out of the southwest, and they did, but not before we got the majority of the day in and were about ready to go home. We had a variety of action today. I spent quite a bit of time fishing along a grass line this morning and again this afternoon. The dolphin we caught were almost all gaffers, a few in the 20s and one right at 30 pounds. Mar 24 Sunny Start, Rainy Ending

It was certainly one of the nicest days of the year, so far! It was greasy slick calm for most of the day, but I did a pretty good job of steering around the fish. I started out trying for the blackfins, but they really never got going. After making a few laps and only catching two, I decided to work off in the deep and see if I could locate some dolphin habitat. Out to 200 fathoms and finding nothing, it sounded like I should probably stay back inshore and keep trying for the tunas. W...

Blackfins And Bailers

It was another picture perfect day offshore. Beautiful weather and plenty of action! We started out catching blackfin tuna. Today our bites were on the trolling gear, and the fish were bigger than yesterday. Most of them looked like they were poured out of the 18-20 pound mold. We managed to land sixteen tuna before the bite slowed down and I decided to look for something different. We captured 25 dolphin, a couple of which were gaffers, as we worked south of the tuna fleet. Another gr...

Vertical Blackfins

I headed up to the east again this morning, but quickly gave my group the choice of rolling the dice and heading up another 15 miles and trying for a bluefin, or heading back down the beach and out of some of the current. We decided to go south from where we were because the conditions simply didn't look so promising for a yellowfin. Either choice would have turned out to be the right one, as the guys that went further up the line all caught at least one bluefin, and we had great a...

3/12 Hatteras Offshore Update

The current was screaming today and the yellowfin bites were almost non-existant. There were a few bluefin bites up to the east this afternoon, but I made the decision around lunchtime to steam back down the beach and try to get out of some of the current. Well, the bad news is that today's charter cancelled yesterday. The good news (for those that fished) is that it was one of the better fishing days in a while. Excellent yellowfin tuna fishing, some boats limited out, and a few bluefins as well. Wish I had been there! I did sand the skiff and build spray rails for her, but I would have rather been offshore! Good Tuna Fishing

There was a good sign of yellowfins AND bluefins today, depending on where you were. We had a few yellowfin bites as we worked to the northeast, and towards where the best sign of bluefins had been reported. It sounded, however, like there were a lot more being seen than caught, so I let me group decide whether to go back where we had some yellowfin action or keep heading up the line and hope for the best. We chose to look around for more yellowfins. We got struck a few times, but only...

Epic Tuna Action

Today the ocean was alive with bluefins AND yellowfins! My group was strictly jigging or popping today, so getting out the trolling rods and getting whammed by the yellowfins wasn't even an option. From the time we started fishing this morning till when we quit this afternoon, there were bluefins and yellowfins busting the surface. Gaffers In The Deep

I headed south this morning, and promised my group some wahoo action, but I was wrong. After pounding the break, with no luck, I headed on off to the deep in hopes of finding an edge. I found it in 250 fathoms, and we landed three gaffers out of a half dozen bites. We headed out this morning with yellowfin on our minds, but our minds changed! Lots Of Action!

Me and my crew got an early start this morning and headed up the line in search of a bluefin or two. There have been some of the big boys around, but as luck (or lack of) would have it, there wasn't a giant bluefin caught in the Hatteras or Oregon Inlet fleet today. We weren't set up to catch yellowfins, but they were very abundant. We did manage to land a dozen in the 20-30 pound range, and if we would have had our yellowfin spread out, it could have been ugly! We also caught...

1/14 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

We gave the blackfins a try today, in spite of the windy northwest conditions. There was no shortage of action on the vertical jigs, but it seemed that sharks had inhabited the same area that the tuna have been. We got plenty of tuna bites, but almost every time we hooked a fish of any size, it got eaten by a shark. We had close to 20 fish eaten, most of which we assume were blackfins. We managed to land three. There were plenty of false albacore as well, but the guys usually get those...

Now We're Ready.....

.....for 2012! Justin and I have spent a blustery few days in the boatyard doing our annual haul out. Back overboard tomorrow morning and ready for another great season! Can't wait for you to join us! Oh, if you are itching to go fishing now, there are several options including yellowfin and blackfin tuna. Fishing has been really good....

12/19 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

More kings today for us! It was still not quite as good as we need it to be for a commercial trip, but we caught 350 pounds of king mackerel on a beautiful December day! It's supposed to be nice again tomorrow, so hopefully they will bite better. The last few days there has been a charter or two, and I have heard reports of great blackfin tuna fishing on the vertical jigs. Also, there were a couple of wahoos caught today....

12/15 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

We searched for kings today but didn't have much luck. The yellowfins bit good for the boats fishing for them. The cold water has crept back across the king mackerel grounds, completely shutting off the bite. We steamed to the east till we got in some good water, but the kings weren't there. We did catch a wahoo and 450 pounds of false albacore, to hopefully pay our fuel bill, but that was it. The good news is that the couple of boats that had charters today limited out on yell...

Dec 9th 2011

We searched for more kings today, but the bite was slow. For a change, instead of too much cold water, there was warm water everywhere. All the way in to 8 miles from the inlet the surface temp was 72 degrees. The fish were scattered and we just had a very occasional bite. It's supposed to blow for the next few days, so who knows what it'll be like after that!...

Overview

We have commercial fished the last few days, and it has been pretty slow thanks to cold water, but things began to shape up this afternoon. We didn't have one of those "days to remember", but after catching one king mackerel yesterday, and none the day before, a little over 650 pounds for the day was a pleasure. Warmer water pushed back over the area we have been fishing and the kings were a little more cooperative. We fished late, so I didn't have a chance to take a...

Last Minute Decision!

My buddy Casey made the last minute decision to drive down from Connecticut for some fishing therapy! I don't know how much sleep he got in the car between the time he arrived and the time we pulled away from the dock, but I'm sure that after driving for twelve hours, fishing all day and then driving halfway back tonight, he's gonna be wiped out. The cool thing was that we had a gorgeous fall day, and a pretty good bit of action. We didn't hang on to as many kings as we...

Double Bonus

We caught a well full of live bait this morning and went after the kings again. The water was not as clear as it was the last day we fished, so in the beginning the bite was a little slower. After a few hours, things picked up and the action was about like you would expect. We caught two citation kings today, a 42 and a 35 pounder, but the bonus was when a 61 pound wahoo skied on a flatline live bait on a TLD 20. After a long fight, we landed the fish, good job Mike! We also caught a b...

Another Commercial Day

We headed off for another day of commercial king mackerel fishing this morning. The fish were pretty scattered, and you seemed to be able to get a bite just about anywhere, but never enough to really crush them. We scrapped out 700 pounds, with some nicer fish mixed in. In this picture Justin and Jim are holding a 40 pounder....

CRAZY Live Bait Action!

After the action we had yesterday and the size fish that we saw, I strongly suggested to my party that we catch live bait this morning and try for the kings. It was simply as good as it gets. The day was perfect, greasy calm, and the fish were big and hungry. We used all of our live bait up by late morning, as the bite was non-stop. It was hard to say who caught what, but I weighed a citation (30 pounds +) for everybody, and there were more that would have made it that I didn't wei...

Option Two

My guys wanted to fish for tuna today, but since the yellowfins were pretty scarce yesterday, I offered wahoos or kings. They wanted to try for some wahoo action, but after I arrived where we fished yesterday, the water temperature had dropped six degrees and the bites were almost non existent. We did catch one 35 pound wahoo and two gaffer dolphin, but that was about it. I decided to reposition myself, so I jogged a long ways up the line to get to the mackerel fleet. Once we got there...

Back Offshore

I headed south this morning in search of some wahoo action. I actually went too far south, and had to work back up the line before I had some action, but we did wind up catching five out of nine or ten wahoo bites. They were nice fish, all 30-35 pounders. I also found a boat transom floating out there and figured that it would be loaded with fish, but only caught three gaffers and a bailer around it. Still, glad to have them! It was a beautiful day offshore. Thanks Jim and Ken!...

More Kings!

My day started off with a beautiful sunrise, and ended with another 2400 pounds of king mackerel on the market! All I can tell you is kingfishing is hot right now!...

After Hours

We spent most of the day in the wrong places but in the bottom of the 9th we finally got on some fish. There was a huge "belly" of cold water over the area that we caught tuna in Thursday, so I made the decision to jog ten or twelve miles to the east. When I arrived, I was amongst twenty or more other boats who weren't catching anything either! Since I was WAY out of position, the southern end of the fleet was whacking the wahoos and a few tuna. I made another run back to...

11/3 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

My original notion was to look for live bait and try for the kings, but (A) bait was hard to find, and (B) there was cold dirty water over the king mackerel grounds. We headed on off to give the wahoos a try.     I hated to be late, but once we got there, the wahoo fishing was pretty good. We wound up landing six wahoos out of a dozen or more bites. Several of them were close to 40 pounds. We also caught three blackfins, just to add a little variety to the catch! It was a beaut...

Live Bait Action

We caught some live bait this morning and headed out for some light tackle action!     Everybody that knows me knows how much I love fall fishing. Part of the reason for that is kings. There is nothing we do quite like live bait kingfishing. We caught some bait this morning and headed on out. Once the kings started biting, it was as fast as you could go till we ran out of bait. Fortunately they were biting dead ballyhoos as well, so we were able to catch the five that we needed...

More Wahoo!

Today the wind breezed up out of the northeast, but we still managed to land three nice wahoo and four blackfins.     It still wasn't what I would call "red hot" fishing, but we had an occasional bite, and when we did, it was a quality bite. I promised my friend Jay that I would mention that we also caught eight big false albacore, even though they aren't pictured. We will cut them up and use them for strip baits for king mackerel. Once again, a pleasure having you on...

10/23 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

Today we survived a choppy northeaster, had a bunch of bites and caught a few nice fish!     The choppy conditions didn't help with the bite/catch ratio, in fact it was terrible today. We landed three out of thirteen wahoo bites, and one yellowfin tuna. We had plenty of action but just weren't able to capitalize on most of our bites. One of our wahoos made the citation weight of 40 pounds, congratulations! Thanks again for fishing with us Miles!     Godspeed...

Commercial Kings

They are here. Hopefully the kings will stick around past the new year, but every day that I don't have a charter, I hope to be commercial kingfishing.     It was beautiful offshore today. The kings bit good and we wound up with 1400 pounds on the market. plus a couple of nice blackfin tuna, which me, Justin and Freddy will enjoy ourselves. I heard of a few wahoo offshore, some dolphin and a couple of yellowfin.   Kelly Martin, I know you are lickin' your lips!  ...

Wahoo Kill

Today's ride offshore was slow and bouncy due to a southeast swell and a 20+ knot breeze from the east, but once we got offshore, the wahoo fishing was as good as I have ever seen it.     We were the only boat out today, so the radio was quiet, but the reels were screaming! Our batting average was poor due to the rough seas, but we managed to catch our limit (12) of wahoo, out of 35 bites in 3 ½ hours. It was insane. Our biggest earned a citation at 45 pounds, and we had s...

Thunder Boomers

The weather was anything but perfect today, but we scrapped it out.     The squalls that we saw on the weather radar this morning appeared to be a little offshore of where we wanted to fish, but as we steamed offshore, the squalls intensified and moved inshore. We did the best we could to punch through the worst of it and then decided to set our lines out and hope the rain and wind would subside. After a couple of hours the rain let up, but the southwest wind leveled out at clo...

Sailing In The Rain

Today was our first actual charter since before Irene. I've got to say that I can't remember a day that rained SOOO much ALL day!     I found a beautiful grass line today, and knew that we were gonna KILL the dolphin. There were a lot of fish around, but they just didn't want to bite. It was frustrating to see them and not be able to catch them. We did catch 25, but we had to work for them. The wahoos didn't make much of a showing today, we caught one, and that was our only bit...

All of the offshore reports are great. I wish I was there!     One private boat fished out of Hatteras yesterday, went 1 for 9 on the sails, and said that the wahoo fishing was great. I talked to another captain out of Ocracoke today, he fished the last two days and reported great dolphin and wahoo fishing, plus a blue marlin release yesterday. Remember Me?!

It's been a while, but we finally got back offshore!     It has been on and off with the fishing, one day pretty good, the next day kinda slow. Today was slower than I had hoped, but we did catch a single yellowfin, and one wahoo down to the south. We stopped on a AJ spot to try some jigging, and it worked out as well. It was a gorgeous day and I was glad to have been there! Thanks Corey, see you tomorrow!         Godspeed Charters www.g...

Better Action

We joked this morning about how the weather man always changes the forecast to fit the current conditions. This morning the 15-20 knot southwester had been upgraded to 20-25. My group was game, so off we went.     We hadn't fished long before we caught a yellowfin, so things were off to a good start. The good start turned bad when we lost a 40-50 pound wahoo near the boat. I am still sick from that. We pulled off two other heavy strikes and caught a small dolphin during the...

3/26 Hatteras Offshore Update

I haven't been out since last Saturday, so that's my excuse for the lack of fishing updates.     Last Saturday we bluefin fished for half a day, till the winds were up to 30, but never caught one. Since then there have been a few boats out, and reports of a few bluefin to the east, and scattered yellowfin and blackfin tuna up and down the line. Today we started out with a nice calm ocean, but the northeast winds increased throughout the day and were gusting to 25 when we left f...

Mixed Bag

Today, for a change of pace, we headed south in search of yellowfins, or something other than bluefins.     Not long after we got started, the bluefins found us and completely rim racked our yellowfin spread. We hooked ten, broke off four and landed six. They were all about the same size, but the one we boated weighed 110 pounds. My group asked me politely to leave the area! Anyway, we headed out further where I came across a current edge with some grass made up along it. We di...

Movin' On Up

We had great bluefin action again today, but the fish seem to be starting their trek to the north.     The best part of the action we had today was what we saw and not what we caught. We did land four out of ten trolling bites, and the ones we caught were nice ones. The one we boated weighed 215 pounds. Today there were big areas of fish swimming down sea, rolling and busting the surface. It was a lot of fun just being there to see it all. The fish have moved to the north quite...

2XLs

Today the bluefin bite was on, but the fish were a size and a half bigger!     We caught eight or nine bluefins today, but the average fight time was much greater than normal, due to the size of the fish. We kept the only one that we caught in the under 73 inch, recreational size limit. It was a 65 inch, 155 pounder. The rest of the fish were 80 inchers, plus. One fish was over 90, and an easy 400 pounds. I was happy to get some good photos today. Right at the end of the trip,...

Bachelor Bluefins

What a great way to spend a bachelor party...with your buddies catching fish!     The bluefins that we caught today all looked like they came out of a mold. In fact, the fish cleaner said that every one that was brought in was 58 inches and 100 pounds, give or take a pound. It was good and rough, but we made a day out of it, caught five bluefins, and missed that many more. In the afternoon, the fishing was a little better, but we struggled to get a bite. Southeaster

We fished in a good ol' Hatteras southeaster today.     The thing about a southeaster is that there is no decent angle to take on the ride offshore. It's right on the chin, and the swell usually builds pretty quick. This morning was no exception, and we just took our time as we headed off to the warm water. I went to the same general area that we fished in yesterday but there were no bites. The fleet worked to the northeast and we finally got on some fish around lunchtime. We s...

Good Fishing, Choppy Seas

My crowd has been here since Sunday, waiting for the weather to break. Today was their last shot.     At least the weather forecast indicated that the winds would subside throughout the day, so we had hope. It was blowing northeast 25 + all day, oh, and i t never fell out. Well, at least the fish were biting. SWe fished till lunchtime, had five bites and caught three. G&B Fishing Systems

Today my buddy George from G&B Fishing Systems and AVET reels, got his crew together from Jersey to angle some bluefins.     One thing about these fish, if you want to test out your gear, they'll do it. It wound up being a picture perfect day, and the fish cooperated. All we used today was jigging tackle, conventional and spinning. I don't know how many bites we had, but I think we landed close to a dozen fish which ranged from 80 to 120 pounds. We killed the first one we c...

"Bluefin Tuna???" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 02/18/11

Yes its true. Yesterday, Team OIFC headed out on the road on a recon mission to check on rumors of a hot Bluefin bite taking place offshore of Cape Hatteras. Capt. Brant, Capt. Barrett, Capt. Slow Bluefin

Today, the fish seemed to take a break. Yesterday they bit, but not today.     It was a let down for me and my guys who drove through the night to go jig bluefins, but I guess thats fishing. Yesterday the fish were marking good, and biting. Today there was one bluefin caught in the fleet. I don't know what makes them turn on and off, but the fish haven't left, they just weren't hungry. Wish I Had Been There Feb/13th

You know how fishing can be sometimes.     Today was reported as one of the best days of bluefin fishing thus far, this winter. Boats caught them trolling, chunking, jigging, and on popping plugs. Bluefin Action

My hard core buddy Al drove down from West Virginia last night for a day of bluefin action.     The weather was perfect, and the fishing was as good or better. We arrived on the scene to find marks, flat spots and bluefins rolling on the surface. We started out hooking a double on the troll. We greased the first one, a 120 pounder, and then concentrated on finding marks to chunk for the tunas. We had them up on the surface, rolling in the chum a number of times, and enjoyed pit...

Christmas Yellowfins

Justin and I went commercial bluefin fishing today, but fishing was pretty slow for them. The yellowfin fishing was as good as it gets though.     We rig up a little different when we bluefin fish, fewer and heavier rods for starters. The yellowfins don't always bite the heavier gear that we use for the big boys, but today they weren't picky. Justin and I caught 15 in a pretty short amount of time, 20-30 pounders. If we had been rigged up a little better for the yellowfins, it...

Piddlin' On The Skiff

I haven't worked on the skiff a lot in a while, between a few fishing trips, Thanksgiving, and the cold weather, I haven't made much progress.     It takes the epoxy forever to "kick off" when it's cold, so I manage to get a couple of hours in, and then have to stop for the day, while glue dries. There's really not a whole lot left to do though. The inside is glassed, I built one of the thwarts out of foam, glassed over, so it will be insulated to hold ice. I should f...

12/3 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

We worked under conditions that were somewhat less than ideal, but we still managed to scrap out a catch of nice yellowfins.     Let's see. It was windy, rainy, foggy, bad scattered grass, and the hungriest gannets you've ever seen kept eating our baits. Other than that, the tuna fishing was pretty good. We had plenty of bites, but our luck wasn't the best for hanging on to them. We did catch seven yellowfins in the 25-45 pound range. There was a good sign of wahoos, but very f...

Thanksgiving Blessing

We were blessed with beautiful weather and great yellowfin fishing.     We enjoyed calm seas up to the east today, and managed to limit out on yellowfin tuna. The tuna probably averaged 25-30 pounds, with two or three over 40. Home early, and hungry. I've held out all day for this evening's feed. Thanks Mike and Daphne! Yellowfins And Blackfins

We had pretty good tuna fishing today.     There was a brisk north to northeast wind this morning which made the ocean choppy and the air chilly, but once we got to the fishing grounds, we had tuna action right away. We wound up with a nice catch of mostly yellowfins, with a few 20 pound blackfins mixed in, in fact we had three citation blackfins today, two 22 pounders and a 24 pounder. By the afternoon, the wind had begun to moderate, and it looks like tomorrow is going to be...

More Hot Blackfin Action

The fish were smaller today, but plenty hungry.     We made the decision shortly after 10:00 AM that we had enough tuna. The couple hours of fishing prior to that were steady enough to land close to forty fish. There were a few wahoo bites around, so I suggested trolling down the color change in the hopes of finding one. We lost one before we got out of the tuna fleet, and missed another one an hour later. Just before picking our lines up for the day we caught a gaffer dolphin,...

November Wahoos

There were only a few of us out today, and I was the only one who fished to the south.     The boats that fished further up the line had great blackfin tuna fishing today. Down on our end, we had a mixed bag of wahoo, dolphin, and a couple of blackfins. We finished up with six wahoos, all over 30 pounds, the largest a 45 pounder. There was a good sign of bailer dolphin along a color change, but the seas were choppy enough that it made dolphin fishing difficult. We still caught...

Just Fillin' You In

Well, the blow appears to be over. It was slick calm yesterday and today, but of course my charters for Friday and Saturday couldn't hang around. The good news is that the boats that went out yesterday had good catches of yellowfin. Wish I could have been there!     On another note, I had to round up some more fabric before starting to fiberglass the inside of the skiff. I got started around 1:00 and managed to glass all the corners, including the chine block, stem and transom...

Kingfish Half Day

We headed out in search of a king mackerel today, but our weather window was narrower than we had hoped.     After catching bait this morning, I headed further south than normal to look for some warmer water and some king mackerel action. I never really found what I would call optimum conditions before the north wind started blowing 25 or so. We did catch three fish in one spot, but I jogged up the line in hopes of finding something better, and closer to home. We never did, and...

Everything was picture perfect today, the weather and fishing were super!     The main course for us today was blackfin tuna. The action was as steady as you could want it, and we wound up with an excellent catch. In addition to the blackfin action, we managed to land four yellowfins, two gaffer dolphin and a wahoo. Outer Banks Fishing Report - October 2010

October Wahoos       Today wasn't the prettiest weather day we've had in a while, but we made the day and had some action.     It seems like you wind up loosing a few more fish on rough days, but the short version of today's action was four out of twelve wahoo bites. We searched for tuna today, but wound up finding more dolphin!     There were a few blackfin bites up to the east, but it was pretty spotty. Well, most guys don't mind it choppy as long as the fish are biting, but the bites were few and far between for us today. We caught a nice gaffer dolphin shortly after we started fishing, and with the exception of a barracuda release,...

More Wahoo Action

Today was as beautiful as we had hoped. Fishing wasn't red hot, but we had an occasional quality bite that kept everybody pumped up and excited about the next one.     The odds were in our favor today with the wahoo bites. We had five bites and caught four of them. Congrats to Brian with his citation 46 pounder, and to Tom who's 38 pounder was just shy of the 40 pound citation mark, but still a nice fish. We had two sailfish encounters, but both fish were unsuccessfully "s...

Daddy/Daughter Day Out

Today was a little rougher than I would have liked, but my crew did well, and the fishing was pretty good too.     My friend Bill wanted to have an offshore adventure with his daughter and son-in-law, so today was the day. We found several schools of dolphin and were able to catch our limit of them. We had four wahoo bites, but they got the best of us today. We also had three sailfish encounters and managed to successfully land and release one of them. Bill's daughter Kaytee wa...

Dolphin In The Morning, Dolphin In The Evening

It was another perfect day for Hatteras offshore fishing!     As soon as we set our lines out this morning, we had a school of dolphin up. We caught 15 or so, and then it was a long dry spell. I think the majority of our fleet went south to try some marlin fishing, and from the reports I heard, it was good fishing. We did raise a sailfish, but that was our only encounter, and we covered a lot of ground. Late in the afternoon, I found a current rip that was holding some dolphin,...

Offshore Nuptials

Today was a special day for Joe and Susan. They got married on the Godspeed, then we headed offshore for a day of fishing!     We had a nice ceremony at sunrise, in the channel down near the inlet. Their pastor was along to preside over the wedding, and I must say he did an excellent job. After rings and kisses were exchanged, we headed on off for a day of Hatteras offshore fishing. We caught pretty close to our limit of dolphin, most of them in the morning, some in the afterno...

The Weatherman Missed (again)

In spite of a threatening forecast, the weather and fishing turned out to both be pretty good.     The further we ran offshore, the windier and rougher it got, and I figured it to be a "survival" day. Well, the wind fell out, and the forecasted numerous thunderstorms never got here. It turned out to be a nice day after all. We started fishing on a color change and didn't go far before finding a school of dolphin. We managed to catch our limit in an hour or so, with si...

Hatteras Fishing First Timers

We had another glorious day in the gulf stream today!     My group had never been offshore before, so I knew they would be easy to please. The dolphin fishing was a little more "hit or miss" today, but we did find a couple of schools, along with a few single gaffer bites, to enable us to put together a nice catch of fish. There weren't many billfish bites today, unlike yesterday. Thanks, Tom, for a great day!           ...

More Dolphin And Sails

More great Hatteras fishing and weather was enjoyed by all today!     Today everything worked out for me to take my son, Simon, along. I was hoping to have some good action for him to see, and that worked out too. We started about five minutes away from a good school of dolphin, so when we found them, it was on. My group was nice enough to let Simon jump in the rotation and catch a half dozen or so dolphin. That made his day. He was upstairs with me when we found the second bun...

Big Barracuda

We fished in a breezy northeaster today, but I have to say the cool breeze felt kinda good!     When we left the dock, it was windy and raining, but the rain eventually quit, and the day turned out to be reasonably nice. My guys had fished yesterday too, and still wanted to find some amberjack action, so I had that on my mind first thing. We had some bites, but a very large and pesky barracuda kept harassing our jacks. No problem, we eliminated the barracuda. We knew he was a n...

June 30 Hatteras Fishing Report

Fairly nice weather and more good dolphin fishing greeted us today.     It was good to get back out on the water today, after a couple of "blow days". There were dolphin just about everywhere, but for us, it took a while to find the right school. We picked at them, one, two, three at a time for most of the morning, occasionally catching five or six out of a school, till we finally got on a bunch of fish that were hungry. Dolphin On The Fly

Other than a remaining sea left over from yesterday's south west wind, it was a beautiful day.     We found an area that was holding a lot of dolphin this morning, and were able to get our limit of mostly bailers pretty early. Fishing was as good as it has been lately, but the wind picked up and mad it a little on the choppy side.     We still caught our limit of dolphin before 10:00, including several small gaffers. One of my group was a little under the weather, so the group voted to head in early. Still an action packed morning and lots of good eats for this week and for the freezer! Same guys, same fishing, same weather. It's all good!     Not a lot changed since yesterday. We found the dolphin early, hammered them, and skipped baits the rest of the day. Billfishing was a little slow, but we did have a teaser bite from a sail, but the results were similar to yesterday's bite. He wouldn't leave the teaser for nuthin'! June 21 Hatteras Fishing Report

More great dolphin fishing was enjoyed by the boats out of Hatteras again today.     The good people from Western Branch Diesel, which is where I purchased my engine, always come down to do a few days of fishing in June. We had a 10-15 knot northeaster that helped keep things a little cooler today. It didn't bother the fishing though, that was still hot!     I had the pleasure of spending the day with a few teenagers today, and enjoyed seeing them excited about Hatteras offshore fishing.   Today was another picture perfect day for Hatteras offshore fishing.     I put together a terrific group for today's party consisting of a guy and his wife, a girl and her dad, and two good buddies. We found the bailer dolphin first thing again, and hammered them properly. The rest of the day was committed to marlin fishing. We had perfect Hatteras fishing weather again today, and more great dolphin fishing!     We found the "blue million" school of dolphin, first thing this morning, and had our limit shortly after 8:00. That part was great, but there wasn't much else going on the rest of the day. My guys seemed to want to target a marlin, so I stayed to the task, and did finally have a bite. Godspeed Fans From Chicago!

My group today was vacationing from Illinois, and lucked out with a slick calm day offshore.     We found another "Wal-Mart" school of dolphin, and managed to catch most of our limit in one stop this morning. Take Your Pick...Or Both!

The weather was perfect for a Hatteras fishing trip today. Calm seas, light winds, and epic fishing.     I told my party this morning that if things were like yesterday, they could pick between dolphin fishing and tuna fishing. Take Your Pick

Today you could choose between yellowfin or dolphin, but it was hard to do both.     There is never any question about what these guys want to fish for, they are hard core dolphin fishermen. I knew we had to go a long ways offshore to find the condition we were looking for, and we found it just over 40 miles offshore. As we scrounged around in the scattered grass looking for some fish, the radio was alive with reports of tuna action back inshore. I was hoping to find the mega s...
