Description:
Lots of people travel to Cape Hatteras to fish the Gulf Stream waters that lie just a short distance from the coast. Many plan a day or two offshore for an exciting activity during their week long stay on the Outer Banks, while others make the drive just for a day's fishing.
Hatteras is known for its great marlin fishing too. May through September holds pretty good promise of a billfish bite. I tend to think that our better blue marlin fishing is earlier, May to June, while our white marlin and sailfish bites seem to pick up in July. It is not out of the question to catch any and all of our billfish species through the summer months, and there is always that possibility of a "grand slam," especially in July and August.
This is just a brief overview of what you can expect offshore of Hatteras, throughout the year.

Ken and Todd tag-teamed the gaffers today while Vickie took pictures!
The dolphin action was very steady today, and these two got all the action they could stand. We caught gaffers all day, quite a few in the mid to upper 20 pound range, but none that broke 30 pounds I don't think. 5/17 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report
We always have good luck when my friend Bobby comes along. Today was no exception.
For starters, the ocean was nice and calm. We watched as a huge thunderstorm tracked toward us, but fortunately, as we began to enter the leading edge, the storm began to dissipate, and the lightning subsided. Fishing was pretty steady. We scrapped along at the gaffers and wound up with a nice catch, plus a few blackfins. Congratulations Don, on a 37 pound citation dolphin! Thanks again Bobby!...

We ventured offshore slowly this morning due to a steep southeast sea.
The ride offshore took longer than usual, but when we got there, the fishing was as good as it gets. We caught gaffer dolphin until 11:00, and left hem biting. The weather was perfect again today, and the dolphin fishing was great!
We caught the majority of our catch pretty early, gaffers and big bailers. I jogged offshore to skip some bigger baits, but never raised a marlin today. We did have a moment of excitement when we saw a big blue marlin slashing around after some dolphin, but we were never able to raise him into our baits. Thanks for another great trip Steve!...

My group for today has been plagued with bad weather, and blown out on their last three charter dates. Today made it all worth the wait!

The wahoo fishing continued to be great today!

Today fishing was GREAT!
I'm not sure how many wahoo bites we had, but our batting average was well below 50%, and we still managed to catch six, including two citations, a 40 and a 42 pounder. We also had a lot of blackfin action, landing ten or so. Right at the end of the day we caught a lone gaffer dolphin, which was the only dolphin we saw today. We set our hopes on tuna action today, but the wahoos quickly took center stage!
We did catch four decent size blackfins this morning, but the area that we were fishing was quickly getting overtaken by cold green water. It was another picture perfect day offshore. Beautiful weather and plenty of action!
We started out catching blackfin tuna. Today our bites were on the trolling gear, and the fish were bigger than yesterday. Most of them looked like they were poured out of the 18-20 pound mold. We managed to land sixteen tuna before the bite slowed down and I decided to look for something different. Fishing was great today and we had quite a variety of action!
The weather was perfect as well, light southwest. I broke out as pair of shorts this morning, for the first time this year! We wound up with a dozen blackfins on the jigs, including a citation 21 pounder. We also managed to catch about a half a limit of dolphin, mostly bailers, but we did have a few gaffers as well. 3/12 Hatteras Offshore Update
The current was screaming today and the yellowfin bites were almost non-existant.
There were a few bluefin bites up to the east this afternoon, but I made the decision around lunchtime to steam back down the beach and try to get out of some of the current. We had a little bit of luck, 25 miles later. Fortunately we were able to jig a handful of blackfins and skipjacks in the last hour to make out day and put some fish in the box! Thanks again Henry!...
3/11 Hatteras Offshore Tuna Report
The ocean was a little choppy today, unlike what was forecasted, and the current had picked up quite a bit since the last day we fished.
There was a good sign of yellowfins, blackfins and bluefins, depending on your location. They didn't bite as good as they have been, thanks to the current, but they bit good enough. Good Tuna Fishing
There was a good sign of yellowfins AND bluefins today, depending on where you were.
We had a few yellowfin bites as we worked to the northeast, and towards where the best sign of bluefins had been reported. It sounded, however, like there were a lot more being seen than caught, so I let me group decide whether to go back where we had some yellowfin action or keep heading up the line and hope for the best. We chose to look around for more yellowfins. We got struck a few times, but only...

Today wound up being much nicer than the weather man forecasted, but fishing was still a little spotty.
My buddy Kevin called me up and said he wanted to go fishing. I told him the weather didn't look so great, but he said "man... I NEED TO GO FISHING!" Sometimes you just need a fix. We were all searching for bluefin and having no luck. I made an executive decision, after fishing a couple hours, to steam south and look around down there. There was a tremendous area of bluefins today, but very few bites.
I'm not sure but I think there were only three or four bluefins caught out of the Hatteras and Oregon Inlet fleets. 2/14 Bluefin Report
I had some of the same crew again and we had a couple of outrageous strikes on surface popping plugs!
The current had really picked up, and the fish weren't showing on the surface as good as the day before, but there were marks everywhere and a good sign of bluefin in the area. We got lucky and greased our first fish, a 65 inch 150 pounder that was caught on a popper. Gaffers In The Deep
I headed south this morning, and promised my group some wahoo action, but I was wrong.
After our wahoo flurry yesterday morning, I knew with the slick calm weather that we would be able to find some fish and do well. After pounding the break, with no luck, I headed on off to the deep in hopes of finding an edge. I found it in 250 fathoms, and we landed three gaffers out of a half dozen bites. Lots Of Action!
Me and my crew got an early start this morning and headed up the line in search of a bluefin or two.
There have been some of the big boys around, but as luck (or lack of) would have it, there wasn't a giant bluefin caught in the Hatteras or Oregon Inlet fleet today. We weren't set up to catch yellowfins, but they were very abundant. We did manage to land a dozen in the 20-30 pound range, and if we would have had our yellowfin spread out, it could have been ugly! 1/14 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report
We gave the blackfins a try today, in spite of the windy northwest conditions.
There was no shortage of action on the vertical jigs, but it seemed that sharks had inhabited the same area that the tuna have been. We got plenty of tuna bites, but almost every time we hooked a fish of any size, it got eaten by a shark. We had close to 20 fish eaten, most of which we assume were blackfins. We managed to land three. There were plenty of false albacore as well, but the guys usually get those...

12/19 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report
More kings today for us!
It was still not quite as good as we need it to be for a commercial trip, but we caught 350 pounds of king mackerel on a beautiful December day! It's supposed to be nice again tomorrow, so hopefully they will bite better. The last few days there has been a charter or two, and I have heard reports of great blackfin tuna fishing on the vertical jigs. Also, there were a couple of wahoos caught today....
12/15 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report
We searched for kings today but didn't have much luck. The yellowfins bit good for the boats fishing for them.
The cold water has crept back across the king mackerel grounds, completely shutting off the bite. We steamed to the east till we got in some good water, but the kings weren't there. We did catch a wahoo and 450 pounds of false albacore, to hopefully pay our fuel bill, but that was it. The good news is that the couple of boats that had charters today limited out on yell...

We searched for more kings today, but the bite was slow. For a change, instead of too much cold water, there was warm water everywhere. All the way in to 8 miles from the inlet the surface temp was 72 degrees. The fish were scattered and we just had a very occasional bite. Double Bonus
We caught a well full of live bait this morning and went after the kings again.
The water was not as clear as it was the last day we fished, so in the beginning the bite was a little slower. After a few hours, things picked up and the action was about like you would expect. CRAZY Live Bait Action!
After the action we had yesterday and the size fish that we saw, I strongly suggested to my party that we catch live bait this morning and try for the kings.
It was simply as good as it gets. The day was perfect, greasy calm, and the fish were big and hungry. We used all of our live bait up by late morning, as the bite was non-stop. My guys wanted to fish for tuna today, but since the yellowfins were pretty scarce yesterday, I offered wahoos or kings.
They wanted to try for some wahoo action, but after I arrived where we fished yesterday, the water temperature had dropped six degrees and the bites were almost non existent. I headed south this morning in search of some wahoo action.
I actually went too far south, and had to work back up the line before I had some action, but we did wind up catching five out of nine or ten wahoo bites. They were nice fish, all 30-35 pounders. I also found a boat transom floating out there and figured that it would be loaded with fish, but only caught three gaffers and a bailer around it. Still, glad to have them! After Hours
We spent most of the day in the wrong places but in the bottom of the 9th we finally got on some fish.
There was a huge "belly" of cold water over the area that we caught tuna in Thursday, so I made the decision to jog ten or twelve miles to the east. 11/3 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report
My original notion was to look for live bait and try for the kings, but (A) bait was hard to find, and (B) there was cold dirty water over the king mackerel grounds. We headed on off to give the wahoos a try.
I hated to be late, but once we got there, the wahoo fishing was pretty good. We wound up landing six wahoos out of a dozen or more bites. Several of them were close to 40 pounds. We also caught three blackfins, just to add a little variety to the catch! It was a beaut...

10/23 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report
Today we survived a choppy northeaster, had a bunch of bites and caught a few nice fish!
The choppy conditions didn't help with the bite/catch ratio, in fact it was terrible today. We landed three out of thirteen wahoo bites, and one yellowfin tuna. We had plenty of action but just weren't able to capitalize on most of our bites. One of our wahoos made the citation weight of 40 pounds, congratulations! Thanks again for fishing with us Miles!

They are here. Hopefully the kings will stick around past the new year, but every day that I don't have a charter, I hope to be commercial kingfishing.
It was beautiful offshore today. The kings bit good and we wound up with 1400 pounds on the market. plus a couple of nice blackfin tuna, which me, Justin and Freddy will enjoy ourselves. I heard of a few wahoo offshore, some dolphin and a couple of yellowfin.

Wahoo Kill
Today's ride offshore was slow and bouncy due to a southeast swell and a 20+ knot breeze from the east, but once we got offshore, the wahoo fishing was as good as I have ever seen it.
We were the only boat out today, so the radio was quiet, but the reels were screaming! Our batting average was poor due to the rough seas, but we managed to catch our limit (12) of wahoo, out of 35 bites in 3 ½ hours. It was insane. Our biggest earned a citation at 45 pounds, and we had s...

One private boat fished out of Hatteras yesterday, went 1 for 9 on the sails, and said that the wahoo fishing was great. I talked to another captain out of Ocracoke today, he fished the last two days and reported great dolphin and wahoo fishing, plus a blue marlin release yesterday. It has been on and off with the fishing, one day pretty good, the next day kinda slow. Today was slower than I had hoped, but we did catch a single yellowfin, and one wahoo down to the south. Today, the fish seemed to take a break. Yesterday they bit, but not today.
It was a let down for me and my guys who drove through the night to go jig bluefins, but I guess thats fishing. Yesterday the fish were marking good, and biting. You know how fishing can be sometimes.
Today was reported as one of the best days of bluefin fishing thus far, this winter. Boats caught them trolling, chunking, jigging, and on popping plugs. There were a lot of marks, and fish rolling and busting the surface. Wish I would have had a trip. The weather turned out to be really nice too, so I guess today was the prettiest day of the weekend.

My hard core buddy Al drove down from West Virginia last night for a day of bluefin action.

Christmas Yellowfins
Justin and I went commercial bluefin fishing today, but fishing was pretty slow for them. The yellowfin fishing was as good as it gets though.

Piddlin' On The Skiff
I haven't worked on the skiff a lot in a while, between a few fishing trips, Thanksgiving, and the cold weather, I haven't made much progress.
It takes the epoxy forever to "kick off" when it's cold, so I manage to get a couple of hours in, and then have to stop for the day, while glue dries. We worked under conditions that were somewhat less than ideal, but we still managed to scrap out a catch of nice yellowfins.

We were blessed with beautiful weather and great yellowfin fishing.

We had pretty good tuna fishing today.
There was a brisk north to northeast wind this morning which made the ocean choppy and the air chilly, but once we got to the fishing grounds, we had tuna action right away. Today wasn't the prettiest weather day we've had in a while, but we made the day and had some action.
It seems like you wind up loosing a few more fish on rough days, but the short version of today's action was four out of twelve wahoo bites. Probably another three or four that we lost were on and in the chair, they simply got away. There were some blackfins caught further to the east, and some king mackerel bites inshore.

There were a few blackfin bites up to the east, but it was pretty spotty. Fishing off Hatteras
Fishing has been good for Black-fin tuna, wahoo getting better as several large wahoo have been landed. Sailfishing has been excellent with some boat's releasing two or three per day. Dolphin are getting more scarce but some boat's still getting a limit of smaller dolphin. Amberjack's are plentiful, fun to catch and good to eat.Inshore fishing for spanish mackeral is excellent with limit's of 1 to 3lb mackeral being caught daily along the beach....

Today was the best day of action yet!
We had steady action all day long. Mostly gaffer dolphin, and a few bailers. We wound up with a beautiful catch, including a few fish that were pushing 30 pounds. Added to the great dolphin fishing was a pretty hot billfish bite, There were a number of blue marlin seen, a lot of whites, and quite a few sails throughout the fleet. I didn't know if we would get the whole day in or not, due to numerous storms forecasted for the afternoon. As it turned out, we never had any rain and the seas were calm all day. We had a long run again this morning, to the blue water, and the light southwest wind that was forecasted turned out to be a stiff 20+ all day.
Fishing wasn't as good as yesterday, but we still had some action. If the seas had been a little calmer, it would have made our job easier, and our success rate higher. We headed east this morning on a tip about a few yellowfin bites yesterday.
Well, today was another day. There were no trolling bites to be had. Fortunately, we were able to catch our limit of tilefish on the bottom to provide some top notch table fare for my guys. I did get a report of a better sign of gaffer dolphin to the south, so we will be chasing them tomorrow.

We headed way offshore and to the south this morning, but it wasn't a very productive move.
I think I fished further south than I ever have out of Hatteras inlet today, but the results weren't as I had hoped. We found a beautiful area of birds and flying fish, but the bites were very few. We decided to hit one of the southern amberjack spots this morning, and it was holding the freight. We caught what the law allowed in pretty short order, and they were nice ones. It was very windy over the weekend, and even though a few boats tried it yesterday, my party wanted to reschedule.
