Description:

The area is a major yachting center, with 42,000 resident yachts and 100 marinas and boatyards. Fort Lauderdale and its suburbs host over 4100 restaurants and 120 nightclubs.

Fishing is fantastic here.

Anglers come from all corners of the world to experience Fort Lauderdale sport fishing. There are three times of the year that generate big migrations of fish throughout South Florida including the Fort Lauderdale region. The first migration starts with Sailfish in the months of December through April.

In the months of May through July we have a great Shark run. The summer months provide great Mahi-Mahi and Wahoo fishing. Also keep in mind there are plenty of other fish that are targeted like Cobia, Black Fin Tuna, King Mackerel, Bonito, Barracuda and Swordfish through out the year.

We are fortunate to have such deep water off Fort Lauderdale, for example within 2 miles of shore we are fishing in 200 ft of water and the game fish off Fort Lauderdale are some of the most sought after fish in the world.

Fishing cover/structure:

Reefs, wrecks, ledges

Fishing tips/tactics:

The techniques used for fishing in Fort Lauderdale are a wide variety depending on many variables. For example if there is a 10 to 15 mph of wind out of an Easterly direction, we are able to try kite fishing where we have our lines attached to release clips hanging from the kite. The intention of the kite is to present our bait fish to the predator fish in its most natural form (as a school of bait) which is extremely effective.

Another method used for Ft Lauderdale deep sea fishing is trolling live and dead Ballyhoo’s. Also we do Fort Lauderdale wreck fishing and the area coastal waters have a great system of wrecks. Some of the wrecks are located in 75’ of water and others are located out in 400+’ of water where we may use electric reels to fish that deep.

Feb 14 Fort Lauderdale Charter Fishing Kids and Families

Charter fishing in Fort Lauderdale with the family and kids seems to be one of those things enjoyed. It’s not something you can do many places in the country so why not enjoy and give it a try? It could be you are traveling with the family from somewhere in the north like Tim and his 9 year old daughter Analyze, or perhaps your parents are visiting from Illinois as Jessica’s da Art did. Two separate groups of two, meeting on the boat for a fishing trip. And both groups said the...

Fort Lauderdale Fishing on the Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale is great all year round. The water temperature ranges from the low to mid 70’s to the mid 80’s, which means that we have fish traveling through our wreck and reef structures throughout the year. The time it takes to reach the fishing grounds after leaving the dock can be anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes, sometimes 45 minutes when we are heading off shore.  During the winter months, we target Sailfish, among other spec...

Jan 30 Ft. Lauderdale fishing charters / Sailfish

Our Ft. Lauderdale fishing charters ( as expected for this time of year) are once again tending to focus a little more on Sailfish. There are some Kingfish around with an occasional larger one, but most still remain small. Several Wahoo have hit the fish box with the largest around 20 pounds. We did try the Grey Tiles again yesterday and they bit very well, but again smaller fish. They are absolutely fantastic eating. Mahi-Mahi have been virtually non existent. But Sailfishing is again on t...

Jan 21 Ft. Lauderdale Fishing Trips / Texans

We seem to get a good number of Texans on our Ft. Lauderdale fishing trips aboard Marlin My Darlin. We had the pleasure of fishing with Brian, Rick, and their sons Trevor and Anthony last Tuesday. We had a beautiful day with pleasant sea conditions and plenty of sun. Good clean water and a slight north current on the edge had us expecting a lot of action, but it wasn’t to be as we struggled for most of the morning along with the rest of the fleet to find some fish. Fort Lauderdale Fishing on Happy Day Today with Capt. Tom Zsak

A cold front has come down early January which has given us a decent bite and is continuing to give us a good bite. This is what all South Florida fishermen wait for all year. The cold fronts are low pressures that in multiple ways (to only mention a few) cause bait and Sailfish to start heading South. The low pressure caused by the cold front is felt by all the fish, which changes migration patterns and feeding patterns, which is an indication of a storm/low pressure. Also...

The Happy Day Today received a surprise visit from Captain Dan Duhamel of Paul’s Boat Lines LTD from Ottawa, Ontario and three of his captains, Pat, Lou, and Jack to take a busman’s holiday.  With favorable winds out of the east northeast at 10-15 mph, blue waters still pushed in for the past five days on the second reef and Sailfish action still good, the angler’s choice was to catch Mahi Mahi’s.  As we got close to the sea buoy off of Fort Lauder...

Fishing Fort Lauderdale Lady Pamela 2

Today was a fun day for me as I ran the cockpit while my mate Drew ran the boat during a full day charter. We ran north 20 miles and got to our fishing spot right at about 8:15 a.m. We had just gotten our first two baits on the kites when our client Mark hooked a sailfish! I quickly grabbed a spinning rod and bait from the well and pitched it towards a second fish for another quick hookup. It seemed like we released both fish within two minutes! I reeled in the second kite bait and we ran a...

Fishing Fort Lauderdale! Day One Saga! Reel Appeal! WOW!

This morning we headed out at 7am and we had the pleasure of entertaining a group of buddies from PA.! The waters were a little rough. We experienced 1-3 foot waves at times but with a strong south current. Fishing was a little tough for most out there but Captain Kent Smith " Kunta " and mate Kevin knew exactly what time it was and turned it up a few levels to make it happen for the group of great guys from PA.! Next thing you know a huge Wahoo made 2 passes at one of the long ba...

Fort Lauderdale Fishing, lots of Mahi Mahi

It's the most wonderful time of the year! The schools of bait are here, shoals of mullet and balls of sardines and acres of ballyhoo. The mahi mahi have been showing a trend in the last couple years ft lauderdale mahi mahi fishing was always considered a summer time fishery but the last couple of years the summers have been so so for the golden gamester and the winter has been excellent for them. Even better news they are close to shore right off the edge of the reef and sometimes right...

Ft. Lauderdale Fishing on Happy Day Today with Capt. Tom Zsak

Three guys from New York City, Ed, Mark and Jack, ventured down to sunny Fort Lauderdale FL to charter the deep sea fishing boat, Happy Day Today, with the Topshotfishing team.  As we left the dock at Bahia Mar to do some sport fishing off of Fort Lauderdale FL, Mark expressed a desire to take back some eating fish, preferably Mahi Mahi, even though Sailfish has been excellent this past week.  A stiff wind out of the north at 10-15 mph and seas 3-5 f...

Fort Lauderdale Sailfish Bite Heats Up

Sailfish on splashdown in Fort Lauderdale Sailfishing in Fort Lauderdale is heating up this week with the 20+ mph east winds we’re getting this week.  The Out of the Blue is crushing the sailfish on their sportfishing charters, kite fishing in 100-150′ of water.  Yesterday’s morning charter landed 2 sailfish and the afternoon trip caught 4 and missed 2 others!  Afternoons are catching more sailfish on average than th...

Lady Pamela 2 Fishing Report Dec 1-4

December 1, 2, 3, 4, 2011 During the first four days of December, the northeast to east winds were just relentless. They were blowing about 10 20 knots the first two days and 20 35 knots the second two days. The good news though is that the mahi-mahi fishing has been the best I have ever seen. We have been averaging 5 fish every trip up to 30 lbs., with most of them gaffers. All of these fish have been on the reef, in 200 feet or less, and kitefishing with live baits has been the most p...

Fort Lauderdale Sailfishing

We have had a lot of wind and fronts coming through over the past week or two and the fishing has been really good if you have been up for the ride. Sailfishing remains strong with most half days off Fort Lauderdale catching between 3-10 fish. We have hooked doubles, triples, and even hooking and catching quads at once all on our charters in the last week. It is a great time to catch s...

Fort Lauderdale Charter Fishing/ December Forecast

Charter fishing off Fort Lauderdale in December can be a number of things but the MAIN thing is Sailfish. Even as I write this report, a recent cold front has the crew of the Marlin My Darlin itching to be out there right now in hopes of today being the kind of day where they just don’t make enough live baits for all the fish coming through. It could be another day away or the next cold front that starts the push as these fish move south for breeding this year. But whatever day it sta...

Sunday December 4th, 2011

Fishing Fort Lauderdale in November was absolutely excellent this year! Sailfish took the stage front and center with a strong showing throughout the month. Quite a few fish were taken on the troll along with many on the kite baits. Mixed in with the sailfish and keeping us busy and entertained were the hoardes of mahi mahi. The green and yellow demons swarmed our waters from right on top of the reef in 50 feet of water showering shoals of ballyhoo, all the way out to 500 feet erupting...

Deep Sea Salt Water Fishing in South Florida Ft.Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Dave Zsak

Every March, April and May we have a nice run of Sharks through Fort Lauderdale. The Shark species are Hammerhead, Threasher, Bull Shark, Reef Sharks and the occasional Mako. Now all of these Sharks are not killed and we release every one. Not everyone lives, but we have a survival rate of over 65% to 70%. The few Sharks we release that dont live are usually hooked deep in the gills. However most Sharks we catch and release swim away with a de-hooker and no hooks in the Sharks mouth.  ...

Grouper fishing out of Lauderdale

John and his son caught this nice Grouper on one of our wrecks located in 200 feet of water just off Ft. Lauderdale. There are a total of 30+ wrecks that are available to fish. The best wreck to fish is based on what you would like to target. For example we are looking for one of 4 or 5 species that we catch on our wrecks off Ft. Lauderdale. The depth ranges from 50 feet of water to over 450 feet of water. Typically the shallower wrecks we are catching fish like Barracuda and Snapper, when we...

Deep Sea Fishing Ft.Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

A beautiful day again today in Ft. Lauderdale to go deep sea fishing. The wind was out of the southeast, about 6 miles per hour, which pushed the blue water into 80 ft. of water. There was a 25% chance of rain but you would never have believed it since the weather was gorgeous. In the late afternoon, the rains came in over the Everglades.     We departed at 7:45 am from Bahia Mar, Fort. Offshore fishing for Mahi and Wahoo off Ft. Lauderdale

We have been offshore fishing this September. The bite has been good to horrible. We have had days where the weedlines, floating depris and bait are all concentrated in one area. That is when the Mahi and Wahoo bite best. The tough part is going offshore and locating that gold mine. The back up plan in the event we are not successful, we head back inshore around a 100 to 200 feet of and target Sailfish, King Mackerel, and also hit the wrecks and reefs.     To book a fishing cha...

Zsak, here is a photo of Timmy Deerwester one of our long time repeat cusotmers with his Sailfish.     Wind was out of the northeast this past week, about 15-20 miles per hour, which sets the stage for the migration of mullets. Huge schools of mullets were migrating off of Ft. Lauderdale this week, and in return, the predators were not far behind. The Sailfish, sharks and other predators are following the bait. ...

Deep Sea Fishing

Sitting at the Bahia dock in Ft. Lauderdale, thinking about the Marlins I have seen caught in my 35 years of deep sea fishing, one hooked-up Marlin stands out for being extremely unusual.     Back in the early 80's I was fishing in the Bahamas at Walkers Cay in the B.B.C. Tournament on the Pacifier with owners, Marsha and Lenny Bierman, dear friends of mine. In the 25 years we have known each other, we have caught every species of billfish and fished every ocean in the world fr...

We had a great day yesterday. A family trip turned out to be more then they bargained for. What started out as an afternoon on the water to see the sights and relax turned into lots of action. We headed offshore so they can see the ocean but I convinced them to try fishing for a little while, the conditions looked perfect. We just put out the baits and got a quick bite with a Triggerfish which wasn't big but set the pace. Within 5 minutes the spinning rod went off and an extra large Sailfish c...

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report, Epic Sailfish Bite Fort Lauderdale Last week the sailfish that had be stalled up off Stuart finally decided to come through and it was the bite that everyone dreams of. Huge packs of fish came through with double digit catches a common thing if you could fish during the week. Most boats were running out of bait in a few hours because of soo many sailfish eating. In two hours fishing 15 sailfish was not unheard of. The best I heard from Boynton Beach to Ft. Lau...

Dec 19 threw the 31 fishing aboard the Hooked Up Dec 19 Well I’ve got to say that it has been a tough week aboard the Hooked Up. I got a call a couple of days ago from a lady named Kim and she reserved the boat for her dad and her for an early Christmas present. She had mentioned to me that her dad Harold had fished with us before but I never put 2 and...

We had blue water and a bit of north current so went right to it. We set out both of our kites with live baits suspended from them and started waiting. After a while of not seeing or even hearing of any of the other boats seeing any sailfish we decided to put down a couple of deep lines while we were waiting. And man did this pay off .It tur...

Today we took out our old customers Jack and Hassel both from Rotterdam Holland. We wanted to fly our kites with live baits suspended from them but we had no wind at all. So we dropped back to plan B we went to the reef and caught live ballyhoos and slow trolled them just outside the reef. We were at it for about 20 min when a big sailfish popped up on one of our live baits. At first we did not see the fish but we did see our live bait jumping all over the place so we knew something was going...

10/23/08 This morning we started out our day with Brant and Julia from Toronto Canada and their good friends Lynn, Lorie and James from Dania Beach Florida. We were looking to just catch fish and if we caught some edible fish that would be a bonus. As it turned out trolling was just the thing to do. We ended up catching 11 kingfish and while trolling dead baits we got a bite on one of the outriggers. The line started peeling off the reel and we knew this was no kingfish. It only took a couple s...

I get to write about some stories that are just a little notch above the others. That is the case in this fishing report( Oct 5th) In being a charter boat fisherman and part time writer in theses short fishing stories.Today I was not to be there on the boat instead my son Luis and my Captain Jay Jay were running the business. This was a rainy grey over cast day and we only had one person scheduled to go out on a shared charter. Since we had no one to join him at 1:00 for an afternoon of fishin...

NE Florida inshore/nearshore report March, the transition month, is here and we'll be steadily moving from our winter patterns into spring as the water warms. In fact, a customer caught a jack crevalle and a spanish mackerel a couple days ago in St. Augustine, which is a sure sign fish are moving north. There continue to be large numbers of bluefish throughout our area. Sometimes they can be a nuisance when you are targeting other species. Sheephead are biting very well right now at area jetti...
