Distance:

Description:

Clark Canyon Reservoir offers some of the finest lake fishing for rainbow trout to be found anywhere in the state. Each year the reservoir is heavily stocked with fast growing strains of rainbow trout. Due to the warm water and fertility of the reservoir (the reservoir has hatches), these trout become large and feed aggressively.

Clark Canyon Reservoir, located south of Dillon, is the headwaters of the Beaverhead River and the terminus of the Red Rock River. Access to the reservoir is excellent, as it lies just off Interstate 15. A number of dirt roads ring most parts of the reservoir, allowing for easy access to all parts of this 5,000 acre lake.

Use of Clark Canyon Reservoir is quite high. It receives heavy use from personal watercraft, water-skiers and pleasure boaters. It also receives fairly heavy use from fisherman due to the high quality of the fishing.

The large size of the reservoir, combined with frequent high winds and lots of motorboats, do not present ideal conditions for using a float tube. As a result, any anglers planning on venturing away from the Beaverhead River to try their luck on the reservoir should either use an inflatable kayak or traditional canoe when winds are light or a motorboat during windier conditions. Additionally, by the end of the summer, especially during a dry year, the reservoir can be extremely low as it is heavily drawn down for irrigation use.

Concrete boat ramps, picnic shelters, marina.

Tips/Tactics:

Large streamers work well for the larger trout in the reservoir, while smaller flies fished on top will catch the smaller fish when they are actively feeding.

Combined Trout: 3 daily and in possession, only 1 over 23 inches.

Burbot (ling): 3 daily and in possession, only 1 over 28 inches.

Clark Canyon Reservoir Fishing Report 03.29.12

Recorded: 50 ° F  Fishing: Good The reservoir is mostly ice-free except for the dam and west end near where Horse Prairie creek comes in.  We have had a lot of customers fishing, but not too many reports of great days quite yet.  Most anglers are catching a few big Rainbows but are having to work for them.  The ice came off pretty fast and early this year, so it will probably be another week or two before the fish get into the s...

Clark Canyon Reservoir Fishing Report 03.22.12

Recorded: 40 ° F  Fishing: Good Just last Sunday, the only open water on Clark Canyon Reservoir was located on the south side, from Lone Tree all the way over past Red Rock to the freeway.  As of yesterday, there is a whole lot more open water, and the vast majority of the south shore is wide open.  I ran down yesterday to check it out, and everything from Hap Hawkins to the freeway is wide open, and some gentleman were catching...

Clark Canyon Reservoir Fishing Report 11.17.11

Recorded: 40 ° F  Fishing: Great The fish have started cruzing the banks of Clark Canyon Reservoir and fishing from shore has been productive.  Streamers and leeches in burgandy, black, brown, and olive are catching fish.  Bait fish imitations will get plenty of action as well.  There are some really big fish being taken this season. The weather has been fantastic, so now is your time to catch a trophy brown...

Clark Canyon Reservoir Fishing Report 10.20.11

Fishing: Great   Look to the shallows at the Red Rock end to produce the best fishing, although Horse Prairie is worth a look as well. We've seen more big browns over there. Midges, leeches in burgandy and black or brown and olive, and bait fish imitations will get looks. There are some big fish being taken.   The weather has been fantastic, so now is your time to catch a trophy brown or rainbow before the cold, windy weather hits Clark Canyon.       ww...

Clark Canyon Reservoir Fishing Report 06.27.11

Clark Canyon Reservoir - June 26th, 2011     Recorded: 69 ° F Fishing: Good   Look to Lone Tree and Horse Prairie areas to fish the best. Midges, Midges, and more Midges. Early and late you can fish streamers and leeches with good success. Look for water that's 10-20 feet deep, even deeper and try to find a drop-off. Ice Cream Cones and Rainbow Warriors in sz. 12-16's have been the ticket. The Callibaetis have started which will improve the fishing, especially o...
