Description:
Lake Okeechobee is located in central southern Florida, North of the Everglades and south of Orlando. Lake Okeechobee links the Atlantic and Gulf sides of Florida via the Port Mayaca Lock on the east side of the lake and the Moore Haven Lock on the lake's western side.Lake Okeechobee is approximately 37 miles long by 30 miles wide. over 700 square miles.
Lake Okeechobee is the second largest freshwater lake in the United States. The 730 square mile lake is located in south central Florida. It is shallow (average depth 9 feet or 2.7 meters) and provides an ideal habitat for bass.
The Big O is the place to go if you want to catch big bass. It is a fishermans paradise. You can expect to tangle with 7-10 pound bass. The lake record is 15 pounds 5 ounces. While fishing is very good year-round it is particularly spectacular during spawning season.
Lake Okeechobee has a number of famous fishing areas including the Monkey Box, Moonshine Bay, Fisheating Creek, Hay Fields, and the Cow Pasture.
We strongly promote a "catch and release" policy for all bass caught in Lake Okeechobee.
Aquatic vegetation:
Mainly bulrush, eelgrass, and knotgrass.
Cover/Structure:
Largemouth bass fishing should be best on the outside edges of the shoreline vegetation (mainly bulrush, eelgrass, and knotgrass).
Tips/Tactics:
Try spoons and spinner baits in the grass flats, and plastic worms and flipping jigs in the heaver cover. Florida wild shiners are the preferred bait for trophy bass and it is a natural food that they feed on daily here.

Bass fishing on Lake Okeechobee has been off the wall with big fishing being caught almost every day, but the water level is starting to head south and that means you will want to start to be careful where you run a boat. This Week on Okeechobee
The fishing for bass on Lake Okeechobee continues to be awesome and it doesn’t seem like it is going to slow down anytime soon. I have been catching bass on both artificial lures and on wild shiners, and the wild shiner bite has been off the hook with eight dozen shiners only lasting until noon. The water level is at 12.59 feet above sea level and going down but still a foot higher then it was last year at this time. The bass have spawned and are still spawning on the outside...

As the month of February flies by here on Okeechobee the bass fishing has been best described as awesome. The "bite" is still real good on the Lake. We are picking up a lot of 2 and 3 pound bass fishing artificial baits in the gass and around weed edges. (Spinnerbaits, topwater frogs, flipping jigs and worms). Big bass are coming on wild shiners. GR8 Lakes Fishing Adventures has openings for March but dates are limited. We are right in the middle of Summer, dog days as the old timers refer to them. The water temperatures on Lake Okeechobee have risen into the mid to high eighties in the shallow water areas of the lake. The wind blew 25 to 30 mph today making it quite tough to fish anywhere on Lake Okeechobee. i fished with 20 year old John Buwalda from Michigan, John is a student at Western Michigan University and has some great fishing skills, although nothing can prepare a guy for 25 to 30 mph winds on the Big "O" We caught bass on a skinny dipper and senko's, but did not have a bass that was worthy of a photo.

Record catches on Lake Okeechobee
The recent FLW Tour event on Lake Okeechobee set the lake on fire. A total of 160 pro anglers from all parts of the world ventured out into the lake on Thursday to test their skills against the Big "O". The recent FLW Everstart Series tournament on lake Okeechobee gave anglers a pretty good indication of how good the bass fishing is on Lake Okeechobee. I fished with Victor Cruz and Eric Barreto from Puerto Rico today. Neither of the guys have been bass fishing before, they grew up around salt water. Their first bass trip was quite good, The first Bass Victor caught weighed 8 1/2 pounds, the fish of a lifetime! We continued catching bass throughout the day, having a great time together. I fished with Randel Badeaux and Kevin Labauve from Louisiana today. It was windy and rained on us most of the morning, but Okeechobee's bass seem to love nasty weather and bit for us. Lake O fish report
The lake is at 14.70 this morning, they are releasing water so it has gone down just slightly from a few days ago. The temperature is anywhere from the high 60's to the low 70's, depending on the wind and rain.
The fishing has stayed consistent, with some very nice catches coming in.

Lake Okeechobee bass fishing
The lake level this morning is at 14.18, and going up a bit more each day with the rain we have been getting. The water temperature is still on the cool side however, the cool nights and windy days are keeping it down in the low 60’s. It hasn't hurt the fishing any however.

The wind and cold weather continues on the lake, but the fishing continues to be as hot as ever. The lake level this morning is at 13.58, its up a little with the rain we have had. The lake level this morning is at 13.54, and the water temperature yesterday was 61.2. I'm sure that will change after the wind and cold of yesterday and today. It has been a very unusual winter to say the least, very cold and windy, making the fishing interesting. We have still been able to catch some very nice fish however. The lake level is at 13.50 this morning, the temperature yesterday was 68.3 degrees, that's up 4 degrees from Monday when it was at 64 degrees. It didn't slow the fish down any, matter of fact, I think it fired them up. The bigger fish were on the move and they were hungry. Monday was almost non stop action, some of the best I have seen. Bass fishing has been terrific and should get even better as the season progresses.
We are starting to catch large female spawning bass with regularity. Our biggest fish are being caught on live wild shiners. We photograph the big bass and then release them to be caught again.
The North end of the lake is far outperforming any other area of the lake for both numbers and big bass. Artificial baits are taking good numbers of bass although the bass do not run quite as large as on shiners....

Shiner fishing has finally taken off on Lake Okeechobee, Friday the average catch was 35 to 40 fish, Saturday 30 to 35 and Sunday after the cold front came through we caught 17 basson shiners.
