Description:
New Bern NC is a beacon to all power boaters, sailors, kayakers, and sports fishermen.
The mighty Neuse River has miles of sandy beaches, clearly marked channels, and provides easy access via the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (or ICW to those in the know) and Pamlico Sound out to the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the shoreline forms a boundary of the vast Croatan Forest and there are public recreation areas with swimming and picnic facilities near the Minnesott Ferry terminal and at Flanners Beach south of New Bern.
A clearly marked channel up the Neuse from the ICW will bring you into historic New Bern. The natural channel runs between 8' and 12' with little noticeable tidal effect. A strong easterly wind will raise the level, while a sustained westerly breeze (25 knots) can lower this level by as much as two feet. Also note the sapling net stakes dotting the river, strung with nets in the early spring and late fall. The Neuse is a very wide river, inviting day or night sailing in addition to motor cruising and water skiing.
Check the local bait stores for info, they will tell you what is running, what they're biting, and the owner might just close up the store and go with you if business is slow.
Many boat rentals for singles or crowds are available. Boat rentals in New Bern are available as well if you want to cruise...or pull up some dinner.

It's been a great spring of fishing on the Neuse River. The top water rock bite has been excellent with fish pushing the 30 + inch range. Much of the action is closer to New Bern with NE winds producing the best of the bite. Specks are everywhere and although there are a lot of small fish, we seeing enough keepers to take home dinner. Striper Action Hot!!!!
Top water striper action remains hot on the Neuse River near New Bern. Rapala Skitter walks and Storm Chugs bugs have both produced and we are catching fish up to 32 inches! Speck fishing continues to be great with plenty of small fish and a nice mix of keepers. Popping cork rigs with DOA shrimp or Gulp baits have both worked well. We starting to see some very nice redfish in those same areas as well. Work the shorelines, marsh banks, stump fields and docks....

The Neuse River striper bite near New Bern has been dynamite! Double digit blow ups on the half day are the norm. The fish are mixed in size and are pushing up to 30 inches. Specks remain plentiful in the creeks and river shoreline from New Bern past Oriental. The river near Oriental has been producing great number of gray trout (weakfish) and plenty of 1 to 3 pound bluefish.

early season stripers, specks and shad
Striper fishing is started to pick up on the Neuse River. Fishing out of New Bern has improved as fish are starting to stage prior to moving up river to spawn. We're also seeing both American and hickory shad move up river. Look of both fisheries to get hot over the next several weeks. Speck fishing in the creeks remains good and will continue to improve as we get into March.

Client cancelled today because it might rain, so I went fishing in my back yard. Power Poled down on a spot and caught and tagged 15 specks over an hour and a half. Next thing you know, here comes a strike netter down the shoreline and buzzes me and my fish....NICE. Now I'm sure I'll here the bad apple BS from this but, we need our "Game Fish Bill " HB 353 BAD!!!!...

Top water striped bass fishing on the Neuse River is picking up with good numbers and size. Early mornings and late afternoons have been best with water temps still at 70 degrees, but overcast days will keep the fish busting longer. Specks, reds and flounder fishing has been fare to good and offer an additional target. Both creek and river shorelines are holding the later three species. Soft plastic have produced best with small hard suspending baits also working well.

The giant red drum fishing continues to be good on the Neuse River fishing out of Oriental. Although we've not had huge number of fish as we did last week the last couple of days has still seen plenty of action with fish pushing 60 pounds. Cut bait on a Lupton rig is still the way to go but we did see fish busting bluefish on the surface yesterday. Set up on the bottom breaks in 10 to 14 feet and wait them out.

The post Hurricane Irene giant red drum is a hot if not hotter than before the storm.
Five minutes into fishing my first outing after the storm we landed a 38 inch redfish!
We continued catching 36 to 55 inch redfish over the next couple hours and my two clients ended a shorter half day with 12 jumbo fish! Cut bait is the way to go and the fish are being caught in the Neuse from Minnesott Beach to the mouth of the river in 10 to 14 feet of water.

The giant red drum season has started off with a bang! We are catching good numbers of 30 to 60 pound red drum, fishing on both morning and afternoon trips. The morning bite has been a little more brisk with as many as 10 fish on the half day. We have also had a couple of sight casting opportunities for these monsters. I've had several good days of lite tackle fishing between Oriental and New Bern. The top water striper bite remains consistent and Capt. Dave Stewart and I had a good day catching specks, slot redfish and flounder. Soft plastics were the key on all three.
We're seeing tarpon in the Neuse as well and those giant red drum are starting to show.

We are starting to see a few giant red drum moving towards the Neuse River with plenty of fish in the Sound . Look for the action to start to peak with in a week or two. Tarpon have also been in the Sound. With windy conditions for much of last week, we were able to land both stripers and redfish in the more protected areas of the Neuse and Trent Rivers and in some of the area creeks. Some of the reds were well over the slot and the stripers continue to bite top water baits.

The top water striped bass bite is still going on in New Bern, NC. Morning hours are producing plenty of top water action on both light tackle and fly. A short distance down river, flounder have been biting pretty well and we're also seeing the occasional redfish. Tarpon and giant red drum have moved into the sound and we should be seeing more action on both of those as the week progresses.

The water is warming up and the redfish bite has improved in the many creeks off the Neuse River. Specks continues to be good with an increasing number of flounder. Look for all three along creek shorelines and points but be ready to start fishing the river shorelines as well. Stripers have moved into the shallows closer to New Bern and are getting more active on top water baits. Weedless soft plastic DOA CAL jerk baits have been dynamite on them.

Creek fishing off the Neuse River has been excellent for specks and reds and a few flounder thrown in.
This past Sunday afternoon My family joined me on the water. My 5 year old daughter had a big time and caught specks, reds and a flounder to complete her first Pamlico Slam.

Fishing has been excellent this March on the Neuse River. The deep river shorelines just above New Bern and the bridges crossing the Neuse have produced good quantities of striped bass. Bucktails and soft plastic jigs have been the baits of choice, although surface and sub-surface Rapalas have enticed fish as well. Largemouth bass and jumbo crappies have also been cooperative along many of the same shorelines.

Fishing out of New Bern has been very good and it was outstanding March 9. Striped bass are staging on the Neuse River and large fish are schooled and hunger. With water temps in the mid fifties, there will be plenty of action to come over the next few weeks. Sub-surface baits, like DOA CAL soft plastic jerk baits on a lead head are excellent choices to catch plenty of fish. Striped bass fishing on both the Trent and Neuse Rivers at New Bern has remained consistent. Several nice year classes of fish have been primarily landed on DOA CAL soft plastics and jig heads and Storm shad baits. The fly rod has taken fish and as well as rattle traps. The water temp remains in the mid to low 40's, so look for things to continue to get better as we press through February.

The striped bass fishing on the Neuse and Trent Rivers near New Bern, NC has remained consistent throughout the winter. Even with the cold and inclement conditions good numbers of these estuarine fish have hit the deck. Soft plastics fish slowly on light lead heads has proved to be the hot ticket. Fall fishing is heating up!
The trout fishing has been good out of Oriental with plenty of small fish and enough nice fish to keep you casting. Puppy drum fishing remains pretty good with some great days thrown in. Ive had a couple of sight casting days and one 48 pound giant on light tackle. Were also seeing a good number of flounder. The water is still warm and November and December are shaping up to be great fishing.
The stripers are starting to bust top waters...

Summer time redfish
Summer is here and the redfish are snapping on the Neuse River. Plenty of slot fish, a few shorts and a number of over the slot. Gulp shrimp on DOA lead heads or popping corks have been hot but we have also done well on live and cut bait, DOA CAL soft plastics and Shallow Raps. We are also landed specks to 5 pounds, flounder croaker and black drum. The Neuse River shorelines from Oriental down stream have produced the best. Look for the action to continue into July...in time for the arriv...
Summer fishing heating up!!!
The Lower Neuse River Shorelines have come alive and we are catching reds, specks and flounder. This summer pattern of fishing can be fantastic! Numbers and size can be impressive and the fish will eat a wide variety of baits from light tackle top water, to live bait, jigs and the fly rod.
Look for the best of this fishing through June and into early July.

Plenty of slot reds are in the mix with a few shorts and we've even landed a couple fish over 27 inches.
Striper fish has been good at New Bern with subsurface the most productive method of landing fish but with the recent warm, the top water bite kicked in.

Redfish and specks and starting to show in the creeks off the Neuse River. I had a great sight fishing day with middle of the slot fish this past weekend. Look for things to contiue to improve as bait has begun moving into the creeks.
Striper fishing has been good at and above New Bern....
Finally had the chance to get out on the water this past weekend. Water was cold in the low 40's but my parties were able to land fish, mostly slot striped bass. We fished the Trent River out of New Bern. River conditions there look great but the Neuse remains very off colored. Our go to bait was a DOA 3in CAL shad tail pearl with a chartreuse tail and a 1/4 ounce DOA chartreuse lead head. In addition to plenty of stripers the boys landed jumbo white perch as long as 14 inches on the same...
Striper fishing on the Neuse River at New Bern has continued to be good through the cold and with the warm up should only get better. Soft plastic and live eels fished close to the bottom have produced well. Although they are not ocean giant we are catching quality fish up to 10 pounds on light tackle. Seatrout and striped bass fishing remains good on the Neuse River and the many creeks feeding into it. Water temps remian in the mid to upper 50's with a mass of bait in both the river and the creeks. Bothe the specks and stripers have been eating soft plastics; DOA 4 inch CAL jerk baits on 1/4 oz lead head and 3 inch Storm baits have been producing. The Neuse River at New Bern has been producing striped bass in good numbers. Warmer than normal temps have delayed the winter partern of fish, but we are starting to see larger schools build in deep water structure. Shad are in the Neuse and they are already being caught. This great ultra- light fish can break the winter doldrums with its great fight and hot action. Stripers and catfish can also be found in the same areas of the river in the Vanceboro area.
