Experience:

My Name is Captain Ed Bussard and I am the owner of Bass Challenger Guide Service. I started guiding clients at the age of 18 out of a fish camp called Osteen Bridge Fishcamp on the St Johns River.

Before guiding I was a dock hand for two years on weekends and during the summer months when I was not attending school. It is now 30 years later and at the age of 48 I still make my living on the water as a full time guide. Many things have changed in 30 years but the one thing that hasn't is my desire to see the smile on my clients faces each time they catch a fish aboard my boat.

A proven tournament fisherman, Eddie has competed in the B.A.S.S. Tournament Trail, Operation Bass's FLW, Everstart, and Wal-Mart BFL tournaments.

This has given him the ability to quickly locate fish that are active under all kinds of conditions.

Eddie has also spent alot of time working with handicapped individuals who want to join in on the thrill of the bass fishing sport.

His one passion in life is working with kids and teaching them how to fish and enjoy the outdoors. He will generate memories for youngsters that will last a lifetime.

Fishing Reports

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 06.08.12

Things haven't changed much the past week. Were still catching lots of fish on Artificial Baits on just about every trip. Some days 15 other days 50 in 4 to 6 hours. The only problem we are having is keeping the BIG BASS on and landing them. I was guilty of loosing an 8 or 9 pounder myself yesterday in a local team tournament but that's no surprise for me this year in tournaments as I have fished awful all year. Its hard keeping these big river fish from jumping and ripping the ratt...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 03.13.12

March 11-12, 2012 We were still bringing Trophy Bass into the boat on just about every trip using Wild Shiners. I had Jason in from IL, and he had a great day catching some nice fish up to 8-3/4 lbs. The last two days I had a couple of my regular clients Jack G of FL, and Mike from VA. Mike has fished with me twice at Lake Okeechobee this year, but this was our first trip on the St Johns River looking for that fish over 10 lbs. Late into the first day of his two day trip, I pulled up to...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 02.29.12

I can't say we are catching big numbers of fish at this time. What I can say is we are catching some very nice Trophy Bass on both Wild Shiners and Artificial Bait. I have had a lot of double trips and my good friend John Cox has been helping me with those trips between his FLW Tour Tournaments. Also congratulations to John on his 2nd place finish in the FLW Open Tournament at Lake Okeechobee. Water levels are dropping again here on the St Johns River. I am starting to see some sh...

St. Johns River (Lower) Fishing Report 02.23.12

February 19-21, 2012 Fishing on the St Johns River is steady and the big fish are biting very well. We had to deal with some winds the past couple days but that's the great thing about fishing the St Johns River no matter what the winds are were still be safe and catch fish. Dan and Todd joined me the past 3 days and on Sunday we fished in 40 MPH winds with gust of 58 MPH reported at the local airport. In 6 hrs 20 nice fish were caught and most were over 4 pounds as the cold fro...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 02.13.12

Well we finally broke the 10 LB mark for 2012. I was beginning to think it was never going to happen as we have been catching so many 8 to 9 3/4 fish on about every trip. Irvin caught this 10 3/4 pound fish on Friday Feb 10th on a short 4 hour trip. The fish are really getting with it here on the St Johns River and   I am sure we will see many more over 10 pounds during 2012. Numbers of fish are getting better as well. Last year we had 20 fish over 10 including five over 12 and on...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 01.25.11

Spent today with a couple great guys from the Orlando area Howard and Harold.     These guys wanted to go after a big fish and not worry about numbers of fish which is what I always love to hear during the winter months. We headed out with 5 dozen Large Wild Shiners. It didn't take long for Howard to make this trip a success with a beautiful St Johns River 9.4 LB Trophy Bass. The guys had a total of 15 fish with many in the 4 and 5 pound range and lost a few that would have give...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 11.02.10

Over the past 7 days I have spent 4 days working with the FLW Outdoors Group running a Media Boat for the College FLW Regional Tournament here on Lake Monroe and the St Johns River. The Florida Gators came a way with the win just like last year.     The water temps are still hanging around in the mid to upper 70's and this has the fish biting very well. I spent today on the River with my good buddy Hank looking at some areas for up coming trips this week. Firstarea we stopped a...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 11.02.10

Today was one of those days that makes me love my job as a guide.     I had the pleasure of guiding a father and son on their first bass fishing trip together. Frank Ioppolo and Son Trey 9 years old joined me for a four hour trip on the St Johns River. I loaded the boat this morning with Wild Shiners and we headed out at 7am. First area we fished the wind was a little much but Frank and Trey still managed 4 Bass in the 3 pound range. We made a move to an area that had less wind...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 10.13.10

With the air temps back into the high 80's the past few days the water temps have climbed back to the lower 80's by mid day and mid 70's as the sun rises at daylight. The past few days the artificial bite has slowed down but the shiner bite is still going strong   I Fished a full day trip with Bill and Denise today Oct 12 Th. Our plan was artificial baits in the morning and shiner fishing in the afternoon.   By 9:30 am the sun was hot and the winds were dead calm. This spel...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 09.27.10

This past week the fishing has been very good on the Central St Johns River. The fish seem to be moving around a little more as the water temps begin to cool down with fall arriving. Before this week in order to catch a good number of fish you needed to fish a lot of different spots and catch a few in each area through out the day but on Saturday my client Mike W was greeted with a surprise at the first shiner spot we fished. The action was non stop from 6:30 am until 9 am and every shiner tha...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 09.21.10

It was nice to get back on the water after being sick for two weeks.     On Saturday 09/18/2010 I met Mike W from Melbourne Beach FL at the Hwy 46 Bridge on the St Johns River. Mike was interested in trying to catch one of the Big St Johns River Trophy Bass that live in that area of the St Johns River. I was excited as I knew none of my big fish spots had been fished in weeks. We set out with 42 nice Wild Shiners looking for a Trophy Bass.   We pulled into our first sp...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 08.09.10

The past two weeks we have seen the fish in their summer patterns here on the St Johns River. Flipping main river pads has been affective in both early and late morning as well as fishing the main river ledges with a crankbait and texas rigged worm. Jack G of TN and son Brent of CA had a couple good 6 HR Days catching 15 to 18 fish each day with the biggest weighing 6 pounds. Most fish were caught flipping pads on the main river. Tony J of Sanford FL had a good 6 HR trip catching 10 fish to 5...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 07.23.10

With Tropical Storm Bonnie skirting Central Florida we were able to get on the water and enjoy a not so hot day with a nice NE breeze. My clients from West Virginia had a blast catching 14 largemouth weighing up to 8 pounds and 8 or 10 small Sunshine Bass weighing around 2 pounds each. The action was steady for most of this 6 HR trip on the St Johns River and all fish were caught on artificial baits.A 9 inch Junebug worm and a Rattle Trap did the most damage today. This just proves that the big...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 07.14.10

The fishing continues to be steady on the St Johns River as long as we either have wind or clouds!!!! The day's we have neither it can be tough fishing. I found this to be true on Lake Toho last week as well.     Our main target on the St Johns River has been scattered grass patches in 2 to 6 ft of water right up next to the bank. Casting a Bitters Skip Shad or a Texas rigged worm to these grass patches has been the best way to catch the better fi...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 07.06.10

We finally booked a freshwater trip for today 7/05/2010 this has been the first freshwater trip sense June 15th. I have been staying on top of the fish just in case I got a call. A local client of mine Walt from the Sanford area had today off and wanted to fish a 6 hr trip on the St Johns River.     The fish were eager to bite the entire 6 hrs with over 30 fish being caught and a few nice fish in the 5 to 6 pound range. We fished the Central Section of the St Johns River and cau...

Atlantic Ocean (FL) Fishing Report 06.21.10

Spent the past two days fishing with one of my regular client's Kent S from Ohio. Kent has been a Freshwater customer of mine for over 10 years but made the trip down to FL this week to do some Nearshore fishing with me out of the Cape.   Tarpon was our main target fish for the two days.We found Tarpon both days just off the beach in 20 to 25 ft of water but had trouble getting them to eat and the few we did have eat came unbuttoned very quick. Between Tarpon bites there was plenty of...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 06.11.10

The past week I have had clients wanting to fish for numbers of fish and not really spend time fishing for Trophy Bass. We have stuck with the main River schooling fish and have put numbers in the boat on each trip with most days boating 15 to 25 fish each day up to 7 pounds.     The shad are still thick in the main River and the Bass are ambushing these shad on main river shell beds. Shell beds in the middle of the main Channel have been the best by far.   Rattle Trap...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 06.01.10

If you read a couple of my past reports from this month I mention you don't have to come to Florida in the winter months to catch TROPHY BASS. Dan and Chris proved this the past two days fishing with me on the St Johns River. only minutes from Orlando FL and Daytona Beach FL     On Wed 5/26/2010 brothers Dan of OH and Bob of Tampa FL joined me for and eight hour artificial trip on the South St Johns River. The only bad thing I can say about the trip is the full moon has the fis...

Saint Johns River Fishing Report 05.25.10

Sometimes here on the St Johns River we have days when the shad are so thick it makes it hard to get a bass to eat anything else you offer them and that is what happened yesterday on a full day trip with Nick O of Oveido FL.We headed north on the St Johns River and found pods of shad everywhere, but during the course of the day we only boated 9 fish total and they were on the small side.         Today I fished with the Mike Z of NE and his two great sons. We heade...

St. Johns River (Lower) Fishing Report 09.09.09

The early morning Trout bite is red hot.We have been catching plenty of keeper Trout the past week on both artificial baits and live Pigfish. The best topwater baits have been Chug Bugs and the 3.25 High Roller. Grass Flats with 2 to 3 ft of water and plenty of sand holes seem to be the key.Clean water seems to help but we have been catching some nice Trout in the off color water as well.   My client Bill S of Orlando FL had a great 5 HR trip with me on Saturday the 29T...

St. Johns River - Capt Ed Bussard Report: The artificial bite continues to stay steady. Some days are a little better then others but for the most part every trips is a good trip. This week we have not seen the big fish show up but they are their. We have had a couple on but could not close the deal. I had a great group of guys from Ohio in today Ryan/Rick/Mike/John and we had a great time and the weather even treated us well with a nice breeze most of the morning. My good friend Hank G help...

Capt Ed Bussard- Bass Challenger Guide Service Report:The fishing continues to amaze me everyday. This week has been unreal tosay the least. We only had one day out of four that we didn't catch a fish over 9 pounds and we have averaged 25 to 40 fish a day with many 3 to 6 pounders.A Bitters Bait and Tackle 7.5 Junebug Bluetail Worm rigged with a GamblerRattle Weight has been a great Bait as well a White 1/2 oz spinner bait.We have been catching a lot of fish in the trees and around the mouths of...

Subject: River Report Bass ChallengerI spent the day on the water with my Good Buddy Mickey B and his friend Johnfrom SC.The fishing was red hot just like the air temp We caught them theentire day with about 40 fish being caught between the three of us.Biggest was bumping 10 lb. on the certified Boga Grip. Subject: Fishing Report with DevonWell I finally got the break to get my 5 year old Grandson Devon on the water for a little bass fishing. We had a blast fishing for 2 1/2 hours then it was nature sight seeing for the next hour.We went looking for Manatees with no luck but we did see Eagles,Ducks, and Great Blue Herons. This was Devons first time bass fishing as we usually take him to a small pond to catch bream. The total fish count was only five but it was well worththe time spent with my little...
