Good Spring Fishing

Spring is finally here and with it much warm weather.  It feels like we went from fall to spring because there was not much of a winter, at least it didn’t feel like it.  As far as our winter fishery-it was very short.  We ended up with our usual in the backwaters; drum, sheepshead, founder, bluefish, mackerel however; I found very limited quantities of cobia this season.  Fishing in Flamingo was still very productive.  Every trip out I had was successful.&nbs...

Good all around action.     My favorite time of the year to fish backcountry is late summer and fall. The more we get into fall the more interesting the fishing will become. More baitfish will begin to gather around around passes, shorelines, and key feeding grounds. All of the spots that you find the bait, you will also find gamefish at one time or another. The weather and water temperatures have still been warm enough to keep things on the move and feeding. Expect to see so...

Good winter fishing

On the open areas that lead to Gulf there are plenty of Spanish mackerel for good fishing. Bring a chumbag and you will find yourself into snapper, bluefish, and other surprises. Same applies to the fish in Biscayne Bay. It's mackerel time. And these are pretty good sized fish for light tackle fun. Here you will also find jacks, and plenty of bait for bluewater fishing.     The deep cuts and passes will always have fish on the coldest days. Find an outgoing tide and fish live b...

Good back country fishing

Winter fishing in south Florida means a lot of fun. Cool, crisp weather with blue skies makes the day pleasant but what you're really in for is the hot winter bite. In the backcountry if water temperature is really low I will use shrimp on a troll rite or knocker rig and work the canal and creek bottom slowly. This technique will catch drum, sheepshead, trout, snook, redfish, grouper, and just about anything including winter flounder. This is the time of year to find black drum in large school...

Fall fishing is Great

Fishing as we head into winter should see varying opportunities. As water temperatures continue to plummet so will the fish. Most bottom dwellers will head to deeper water for warm water refuge however; pelagics like cobia and tripletail will be cruising near the surface and subsurface. This also includes the mackerel group, which are an awesome for fast action and good table fare. Bay and backcountry fishermen should target drum, grouper, sheepshead, and trout. I would bring shrimp and a chum...
