Fish’N Conditions May 20th, 2012

Howdy friends and Sierra Drifters.  We hope you all get a chance to come fish with us this spring as it is turning out to be one of the best in several years.  The high snow pack is melting slowly.  This allows a gradual transition into summer, as opposed to the huge run-off in creeks and tail waters which is the historical normal as we approach the Memorial Day holiday. The wind has been an issue recently, and it seems that this pattern will continue through the hol...

Top O’ the Season Fish’N Conditions May 5th, 2012

Fritz Mutter showing off a chromed up Crowley Lake silver bullet And so it begins.  The 2012 Sierra trout season is up and running.  By most accounts it was one of the better openers in recent years with very mild summer like conditions for the weekend.  Access to open waters was excellent, and the DFG dumped plenty of stockers in the creeks and “put and take lakes” to ensure success for those who came up for the start of the season.&nbs...

Opening Day Fish’N Conditions April 28th 2012

Lower Twin Lake in the Mammoth Lakes basin is ice free and ready to fish for the opener!   Howdy Friends and Sierra Drifters.  Best fishes to all for the opening day of trout season in the Eastern High Sierra.  In my humble opinion this will be one of the best openings we’ve had in quite sometime.  The stage has been set thanks to an exceptionally warm weather pattern prior to opening week & a very mild...

April 16, 2012 Fish'N Conditions

April 16, 2012 Fish’N Conditions Dr. Victor Srougi with a trout so fat it should have a blow hole!   Howdy friends and Sierra Drifters.   A string of late spring storms dashed through the region bringing significant snow to the upper elevations and strong gusty winds with cooler air temps.  The extended forecast is calling for a major warming trend currently, and I can tell you it is really nice in the Owens Valley right no...

Fish'N Conditions April 13th 2012

April 13th 2012 Fish’N Conditions The fly fishing on the Lower Owens River is as good as it gets this April   Howdy friends and Sierra Drifters.  We are just a couple weeks away from the general trout opener in the Eastern High Sierra but it seems like we are still smack dab in the middle of winter.  A string of late spring storms continue to dash through the region bringing significant snow to the upper elevati...

Eagle Lake Invitation

Howdy friends and Sierra Drifters.  I would like to invite you to join Doug R. and myself to fish Eagle Lake this June.  Recent storms have put plenty of water into Eagle and we can’t wait to get up to this incredible fishery.  Pine Creeks a flowing-Sierra Drifters is going!!!  Eagle Lake is like Crowley on steriods.  If you quest big numbers of 18-19 inch average rainbows that pull like tuna, this is a trip for you.  (50) FIFTY fish d...

Fish’N Conditions Update-Lower Owens on the rise March 24, 2012

Howdy friends and Sierra Drifters.  It has been fun while it lasted, however I have to report that the Lower Owens River is going to be on the rise.  The good news  from inside LADWP sources is that the total increase will be up to 200 cfs by the middle of next week and then hold here for an extended period of time.  This is not a bad level, especially for this time of year and it will only take a few days for the fish to adjust, water clarity improve, and...

Fish'N Conditions Update March 20 2012

Howdy friends and Sierra Drifters.  We got snow-  lot’s of it.   Elevations above 8000 feet received over 4 feet last weekend and the upper valleys got about a foot.  Very cold air temps will follow this for the next few days with a seasonal warming trend kicking in by mid-week.  The roads to Hot Creek and the Upper Owens will have significant snow and ice for a while but remain passable with a 4×4 if they are frozen.  These locations will have...

Spring Fish’N Conditions Update March 13, 2012

Lower Owens River: The LO remains flowing at 115 cfs.  How much longer these ideal conditions will last is the big question.  Repair work is being done on the power house and it has been taking longer than expected so we are benefiting from the low flows for sure.  When at last the work is completed, you can expect some tough conditions for an extended period as Crowley is as full pool.  The dry fly action has been great most afternoons fishing BWO and caddis adults....

Spring Fish’N Conditions Update March 13, 2012

Eagle Lake: I am very optimistic that by the end of this week we will have enough snow and rain at Eagle to announce the spring trip dates.  The forecast for Eagle and Nor-Cal is pointing towards a substantial amount of moisture to hit the region all this week which will give Eagle plenty of water this summer.  Thank you for your patience, we will give all of you planning on going with us to Eagle an email when we get the green light. Be the f...

Spring Fish’N Conditions Update March 13, 2012

John Whitaker fished with Sierra Drifters on the Upper Owens and caught this beautiful rainbow on the fly Upper Owens River: The Upper Owens continues to kick out some bigs but you will have to cover alot of water and work very hard to get their attention.  The numbers have really dropped off here as Crowley is warming and ice free making it a more attractive area for the fish to feed.  Nymphing has been the ticket using combinations of SJ worms, roe...

Spring Fish’N Conditions Update March 13, 2012

Visco Kid with an awesome EW brown East Walker River: The EW has been fishing as good as it gets with one caveat…The fish are concentrated in only the larger pools and deeper runs.  It is not often you can stay in one section of the river for hours and continue to get grabs while nymphing and fishing the predictable baetis hatch after 1 pm.  I have seen pools holding well over 100 trout this week.  Release rates continue to be under 100cf...

FISH'N CONDITIONS UPDATED JANUARY 10, 2012 Smigey! Happy Birthday big guy. Joe Smigiel could play tackle on a pro team, this dude is huge and so was this buck. Great fish Smigs! Howdy friends and Sierra Drifters. Best fishes to all in 2012. Hard to believe that last year was one of the wettest on record, and this year is so far one of the driest! The contrast between the two winters has been the greatest I have ever seen. The snowpack is less than 15% of normal in most...

New Years 2012 Fish'N Conditions

John Balestra and Two Bug Doug on the Upper Owens December 2011. Awesome fall fly fishing this season! Howdy friends and Sierra Drifters. Best fishes to all in 2012, we wish you a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year. Special thanks to those of you who have supported us in 2011. We are looking forward to making memorable fishing adventures for you again in the New Year. 2012 promises to be a great fishing year for several reasons. The hatchery issues that hampered planting...

Fish'N Condition's in the Eastern High Sierra 12-21-11

The Upper Owens continues to kick out quality trophy sized rainbows and the weather remains extremely mild for December.  The water can become off colored at times below the confluence of Hot Creek due to mild run-off.   We are finding this actually makes the big bows less spooky and easier to approach.  Flashback nymph patterns, light colored egg imitations, San Juan Worms, broken back midges are all getting grabs. Flows on the Lower Owens continue to be ideal for w...

Fish'N Conditions Updated December 6th

East Walker: If you have a serious Jones for the EW I suggest you look at the Nevada section until the flows come up over 50cfs. Tributary Sweetwater Creek adds more water to the EW on the old Rosachi Ranch section and I have found NV to fish much better than the Cal section under these conditions. Add to the fact that it is lower in elevation, hence warmer and with far less snow as a rule and you have a better experience during the winter. Bridgeport Reservoir is once again filling, a...

Sierra Drifters Fish Report

Ken Anderson showing off his incredible rainbow with friend Mark Thomas admiring the big girl. We are seeing "steelhead sized" rainbows on the Upper and Lower Owens in early December. Upper and Lower Owens Rivers: updated December 6th 2011 Every season is a little different but the fall of 2011 will be one I shall remember for a while. Typically fishing begins to slow down on both the Upper and Lower O, however this fall it has done exactly the opposite. Both sect...

Fish'N Conditions Updated December 6th

The guide staff at Sierra Drifters wishes you all a happy and healthy holiday season.  I have just posted an updated fish report that covers all the open waters here in the Eastern Sierra. We are also in the process of creating an improved website that will be more convenient and easier to access information and videos. Should be up and running early 2012.   Be the Fly… Tom Loe, Sierra Drifters Guide Service 760-935-4250 Cell 760-937-2015 Email drift...

Epic Conditions Happening on the Owens Rivers

Happy holidays friends.  The moment we have been waiting for has finally arrived and I am not talk’n bout X-mas gang.  The flows have crashed on the Lower Owens River (well below 200) and the drift boating and wade fishing are excellent.  Great numbers with some bigs on the chew as well.  Spruce-A-Bu’s & Loebergs #8-10.  The forecast is calling for some wind and cooler temps for a short while, however it will once again warm up and the “catchin...

Upper Owens River Update

THANK YOU LADWP!!!     GREAT NEWS. Thanks to a special effort by the LADWP the irrigation ditches that had become de-watered are once again flowing. This will give the many trout fry that had become stranded a second chance to make it back into the Upper Owens before winter sets in. Due to highly unusual circumstances this summer; the high flows allowed the myriad of irrigation ditches to become easily accessible to the spring hatch of wild rainbow trout. Traditional fish scree...

Fall 2011 Fish'N Conditions

Howdy friends and Sierra Drifters. It has been a fantastic fall season in the Eastern High Sierra and we are nearing the crescendo. The fall migrations of rainbow and brown trout are running late in some areas this season thanks to an extended period of mild weather. Look for increasing numbers of fish to begin moving en mass within the next couple of weeks.         Overall flows are excellent in most fisheries and running nicely thanks to the huge snowpack of las...
